“南戏”异名新解——兼及南戏之生成

Reinterpreting the Alternative Designations of “Nanxi”: Also on Its Formation

摘要:

经考辨,“鹘伶声嗽”的本义是“伶俐的谈吐”,与北宋杂剧偏重科白滑稽戏的原始面貌十分吻合,系北宋杂剧南传之产物,于宣和年间滥觞,宋室南渡之际,其又被时人名为“永嘉杂剧”或“温州杂剧”。“戏文”与“永嘉戏曲”均系南戏别称。前者本义是“敷演话文”,表明彼时南戏叙事深受话本小说的影响。“戏曲”在宋代则是说唱艺术的代称,南戏既被名为“永嘉戏曲”,说明两者渊源匪浅。从“南戏”的诸多异名出发,其生成轨迹理应分作四段:鹘伶声嗽、永嘉杂剧、戏文、永嘉戏曲。受限于材料,对南戏生成轨迹的描述应采取“抓大放小”的策略,而相关研究也有必要突破南北戏剧异体的思维局限,以融通南北的“大杂剧”史观,重审南北戏剧之生成、交互与流衍。

Abstract:

Textual analysis shows that “Huling Shengsou”, which literally means “witty speech”, was consistent with “Zaju” (poetic drama) in the early Song Dynasty focusing on comic dialogues. As a product of the southward spread of “Zaju”, “Huling Shengsou” emerged in the Xuanhe era. After the royal court’s relocation in the south, it was called “Yongjia Zaju” or “Wenzhou Zaju”. Both “Xiwen” and “Yongjia Xiqu” were alternative names for “Nanxi”. The former, meaning “performing narrative texts”, reveals the influence of vernacular fictions, while the latter reflects a close relationship between “Nanxi” and the storytelling and singing arts in the Song Dynasty. The alternative designations of “Nanxi”, namely, “Huling Shengsou”, “Yongjia Zaju”, “Xiwen”, and “Yongjia Xiqu”, thus indicate the four stages in the formation of “Nanxi”. Given limited sources, its trajectory should be sketched in broad terms. Future research should also move beyond the north–south dichotomy and re-examine the formation, interaction, and transmission of northern and southern dramas from a synthetic historical perspective of “grand Zaju”.
