改革开放以来, 我国城市人口分布及其形态发生了一系列重大变化。在此背景下, 理论界对我国城市人口分布变动与郊区化的研究也已经取得了丰硕的学术成果, 但总体上定性研究较多, 定量而深入的研究较少, 且研究方法单一, 没有形成体系。随着GIS技术的发展及其应用, 目前对城市人口分布变动与郊区化研究可运用行政区划法、自然标志法、圈层距离法、方向距离法、函数模型法和人口重心法等六种方法。综合应用这些方法对上海城市人口分布变动与郊区化所进行的研究表明, 其结论更加系统、深入和可靠。
