The Metropolitan Rhythm and Its Literary Expressions——A Comment on the Magazine Modern Times

Abstract:

With the emergence of metropolis all kinds of syndromes of metropolis boomed. The modernist Western literature rose just in such a background. In 1930s the metropolis developed quickly in China. The life rhythm of metropolis made people keep themselves constantly on the run and feel at a loss to what to do. MU Shi-ying got his inspiration from the fast style of movie production, thus creating his own special novels with the style of metropolis. LIU Na-ou depicted the sensation transformation of the metropolitan. SHI Zhe-cun delineated the loneliness and indifference of the metropolitan. The destiny of the metropolitan was showed and represented in the creation of the magazine Modern Times.
