Abstract:

The early 20^th century U. S. government's strategy of expansion in the Pacific area was to make the Pacific an "American inland sea". To achieve this goal, Americans took many measures that included building a passage way over the Pacific Ocean, occupying the Philippines as a springboard into China mainland, putting forward the "Open Door" policy, and trying to maintain a balance of power in East Asia by making use of Japan to control China and restrain Russia. Such a strategy had its economic motives and historical origins.
