Abstract:
This thesis re - examines the narrative of fights between the hero and the monsters in Beowulf and the nature of its major episodes and additional characters. It concludes that Beowulf shows a tragic sense of human existence, questions the value of wealth and virtues affirmed by the fighting tribes, and appeals to reason for a more rational life, a life not based on plundering and killing.
Key words: old English poetry, Beowulf, interpretation
