As a great Song-dynasty synthesist of philosophy of principle, ZHU Xi disciplined himself very strictly with orthodoxy Confucian teachings, taking "no desire, " "no emotion" and "no ego" as his ideal personality, thus establishing his rationalistic trend that chiefly advocated principles of self-control and extension of knowledge. However, he never gave up his yearning for free and unaffected emotion behind his dignified reason. From his contradictory mentality we may see ZHU Xi's deep value concerns and emotional romantic disposition.
Key words: ZHU Xi, dual personality, rationalism, romanticism
