WEN Yi-duo's Studies of the Two Poets in the Middle Period of the Tang Dynasty

Abstract:

After his inquiries of poets living in the middle period of the Tang Dynasty, WEN Yi-duo divided them into two categories; MEN Jiao and JIA Dao were two representative figures. In accordance with their different attitudes towards the real life MEN Jiao's poems were characterized by "writing realistically" and "daring to scold" - a spirit of critical realism, while JIA Dao tended to write "the other side of life" so as to escape reality and acquire a peaceful mind, which gradually became a common trend in late years of various dynasties after the Tang.
