The Distinction between “Ethics” and “Morality”: On “Rewriting Chinese Ethics”
    ZHU Yi-ting
Journal of East China Normal University (Philosoph    2018, 50 (1): 1-8.   DOI: 10.16382/j.cnki.1000-5579.2018.01.001
    Abstract659)   HTML63)    PDF (1289KB)(1907)
Ethics and "morality" have been regarded as similar concepts that can replace each other in the ethic circle for a long time. However, this was not true in history. They were different in ancient Greece and Hegel even strictly made a distinction between them. The Chinese terms respectively for ethics and morality, that is, lunli(or renlun) and daode, did appear in ancient China. Ethics means objective human relationships, in which people love the beloved and respect the senior, while morality means the duties of an individual in accordance to his or her ethical roles, which shall be internalized as virtues through cultivation. Morality thrives with right ethics and declines when ethics is in disorder. That is to say, the chaos of ethics leads to moral disorder. It is of great theoretical and practical significance to examine the difference and connection between ethics and morality. It is the premise as well as the starting point of generalizing the ethics in ancient China. Meanwhile, it provides logic and experiential foundation for discussing moral issues such as the "unity of Heaven and human", the "distinction between the mind-heart(xin) and nature(xing)", the "distinction between righteousness(yi) and profit(li)" and the "distinction between harmony(he) and sameness(tong)". By inheriting the tradition in a critical way, we can find out appropriate subject for today's Chinese ethics and hence provide an indispensable theoretical premise for rewriting Chinese ethics as well as theoretical foundation for moral construction. The distinction between ethics and morality can serve as an important "theoretical paradigm" for rewriting Chinese ethics.

Ethics and Its Discourse: How to Rewrite “Chinese Ethics”?
    GAO Zhao-ming
Journal of East China Normal University (Philosoph    2018, 50 (1): 9-14.   DOI: 10.16382/j.cnki.1000-5579.2018.01.002
    Abstract167)   HTML17)    PDF (957KB)(671)
Chinese ethics is a concept with cultural specialty. Based on the life world of Chinese people, it takes advantage of Chinese language and Chinese ways of thinking and knowing. However, it should reveal universal principles in universal issues. The principles valid both in ancient and modern times that we explore and reveal are certainly not about the ritual hierarchy in a patriarchal clan system, but are consistent with the mainstream of human civilization today. Chinese ethics should be in a plural rather than simple form. Chinese ethics should be written with various personal characteristics. Only at the forefront of the age and based on the reality can Chinese ethics today create its own discourse of the time. In order to write a vital Chinese ethics of the time, we should insist on the distinction between "what it is" and "what it should be", the objective certainty of the standard of moral values, the unity of ethics and morality, that of mind order and life order, and that of China in particular and human beings as a whole.

The Frustration in Politics and the Reflection of Chinese People in the Early Years of the Republic of China: The Notional Rising of the Constitution, the Congress, Political Parties as well as Their Actual Failure
    YANG Guo-qiang
Journal of East China Normal University (Philosoph    2018, 50 (1): 15-65.   DOI: 10.16382/j.cnki.1000-5579.2018.01.003
    Abstract135)   HTML7)    PDF (11100KB)(780)
Since the mid of the 19th century, Chinese people had started to observe the Western system of representation from distance, and then elaborated on this alien system with Chinese experience and from Chinese perspective for 70 years and gradually found out that there was no gap between the superior and the inferior in the West, the success of powerful countries in the West and East was due to constitution and congress, and then only congress as a "powerful supervisor" can "stabilize the society and benefit the nation". Chinese people appreciated such a system, admired it and then decided to establish it in China. After 70 years' elaboration and interpretation, China witnessed the most dramatic change in 2,000 years under the name of the republic after the Revolution of 1911, easily transforming from monarchism to the representative system. However, since the transplantation of the foreign system into China, the constitution, the congress, political parties and congressmen coined from the West had been in fierce political conflicts. In chaos, the situation became the opposite side of what had been interpreted for 70 years in a short time. For Chinese people in the conflicts and struggles, the collision and asymmetry between the representative system and China's situation became much obvious. Later, the representative system transplanted by the generation in the early years of the Republic of China became the object of their reflection. Correspondingly, in the great change of thought, Chinese history and Chinese situation once covered by the Western trend of thought came to the vision in the form of contradiction between Chinese problems and the representative system, which caused political figures who used to advocate the representative system to doubt the system and finally abandon it, raising the curtains of the following scenes where new paths would be found.

Does Quantum Entanglement Prove That “Material Is Based on Consciousness”?
    CHENG Su-mei
Journal of East China Normal University (Philosoph    2018, 50 (1): 66-72.   DOI: 10.16382/j.cnki.1000-5579.2018.01.004
    Abstract164)   HTML13)    PDF (1266KB)(1183)
The experiment of "cat" designed by Erwin Schrödinger is to indicate that there is a paradox when we understand the quantum measurement based on classical realism. His quantum entanglement is to sketch the specialty of quantum measurement and to reveal that the knowledge of quantum system as a whole cannot be reduced to knowledge of its constituents. Quantum entanglement is not to prove that "material is based on consciousness", which goes beyond the scope of science. We must distinguish scientific issues from philosophical and religious ones when we want to understand quantum measurement. The confusion of these issues will make the discussion neither scientific nor convincing.

On the Domestication in the Japanese Translation of LU Xun's Novels: A Case Study of Call to Arms Translated by TAKECHI Yoshimi
    FUJII Shozo
Journal of East China Normal University (Philosoph    2018, 50 (1): 73-78.   DOI: 10.16382/j.cnki.1000-5579.2018.01.005
    Abstract242)   HTML24)    PDF (1324KB)(846)
Japanese have kept reading LU Xun for a century. However, Japanese translation does not convey the style and thought of LU Xun well enough. L. Venuti, American theorist of translation, analyzes translation from two aspects of domestication and foreignization. In terms of Japanese translation of LU Xun's literary works, there is a trend to localize LU Xun's works as well as other modern Chinese literary works in Japanese and there is another trend to accept the impact of LU Xun's or Chinese works on Japanese culture. The inclination of domestication in the translation of LU Xun's works is obvious, which can be represented by TAKECHI Yoshimi's translation. Compared with the original work, in TAKECHI's translation, a few times more punctuations are used, so the original long sentences are cut into many short ones. LU Xun's novels are characterized by very long sentences, which show us the labyrinthine traces of his thought. Nevertheless, TAKECHI's segmented sentences change LU Xun's anguish and puzzlement into explicit statements. This paper investigates the inclination of domestication as well as its reason in TAKECHI's translation of LU Xun.

This paper discusses the contradiction between "recording facts" and "advocating wonders" in Historical Records, as well as the boundary between history and literature in it. An analysis of Noble Ruler Goujian of the State Yue shows that most of its materials are from novels, its historical development is philosophically dominated, and there is a story prototype behind the so-called historical narrative. This tells us that Historical Records is not completely a pure record of facts.

On the Documentary Classification of Bill Nichols
    NIE Xin-ru
Journal of East China Normal University (Philosoph    2018, 50 (1): 102-109.   DOI: 10.16382/j.cnki.1000-5579.2018.01.008
    Abstract221)   HTML17)    PDF (1496KB)(491)
Bill Nichols puts forward a concept of "voice" as the primary principle of documentaries, according to which he divides documentaries into six categories. However, in his classification, the concept of "voice" is shifted from content to form, making some of his classification contradictory to his idea that documentaries should deal with real people and the real world. In addition, Bill Nichols' criticism of traditional documentary types on the ground of ethics is not reasonable, because documentary ethics is merely related to personal operation and has nothing to do with the classification of documentary. In the two editions of his Introduction to Documentary, Bill Nichols shows his lack of logical thinking about documentary ontology and classification theory, so that we need reflective thinking and independent judgment on his theory.

From Experiencing to Immersive Drama: The Narrative Transform of Performance
    SHEN Jia-yi
Journal of East China Normal University (Philosoph    2018, 50 (1): 110-116.   DOI: 10.16382/j.cnki.1000-5579.2018.01.009
    Abstract224)   HTML14)    PDF (1422KB)(1377)
Dramatic performance displays a unique cultural consumption landscape in contemporary China in a changing manner. The immersive and consumptive performances of every description emerge in different media environments with a post-modern form, behind which it undertakes the narrative core consistent with modern performance theory. From Stanislavski's "experimentalism" to Brecht's "alienation effect", from improvisation to immersive drama with post-modernity, Richard Schechner, a post-modern playwright, arrives at a more macroscopic level of human performance studies in re-explaining modern and post-modern performance. However, behind the seemingly complicated modern and post-modern performance is a change and a shift of the narrative way of drama. The system of Stanislavski and that of Brecht are considered as modern. Their narrative structure depends on the play, which is stable, and the process of dramatic narrative development relies on performance. In post-modern performance, dramatic narrative is produced at the moment of performance, and each performance can create a new narrative. At present, all forms of immersive performance have constructed a new relationship between audiences and performers, its dramatic narrative is immersed in performance field and jointly completed with audiences' consumption process and performance environment.

    Abstract149)   HTML16)    PDF (2263KB)(823)
The paradoxical situation of the coexistence of China's economic miracle and the development dilemma of humankind should be explained from the economic development model of China. The gradual reform in the 1980s characterized by the double tracking of planned economy and market economy resulted in the "power plus capital" development model, and the symbiotic relationship between local government and enterprises, which effectively prompted the fast development of Chinese economy and created China's economic miracle. However, the symbiotic relationship between local government and enterprises is facing the North Paradox. As the policy profit is gradually saturated, the implicit defects of the symbiosis, such as economic corruption, environmental deterioration, and frequent violent conflicts, are emerging and largely hampering the sustainable development of social economy. The fundamental approach to getting Chinese social economy out of this paradoxical situation and back to sound development is to expedite political restructuring and standardize governmental powers to remodel the government-enterprise relationship.

    Abstract104)   HTML9)    PDF (1770KB)(324)

With the development of China's legal and transparent government, the government information disclosure has become important for the improvement of the party and government's capacity. In recent years, the government information disclosure of urban planning and construction has gained more and more attention. The case study of Jing'an District in Shanghai shows that although the government information disclosure of urban planning and construction has been improved to a great extent, there exist many problems:due to the high cost of disclosing the information, the subjective disclosure is not enough; some citizens regard information disclosure as a way of combating the government; there is a great deal of informal application; the expertise of workers engaged in information disclosure is supposed to be improved; the feedback and evaluation mechanism of the effect of information disclosure is not sound enough, etc. Therefore, we should improve the work in terms of the working process of information disclosure, transparency of public service and the improvement of complaint expression mechanism according to policies and requirements.

Housing Tenure Structure and Housing Price: From the Perspective of Tenant Share of Urban Families
    CHEN Zhuo, CHEN Jie
Journal of East China Normal University (Philosoph    2018, 50 (1): 136-148.   DOI: 10.16382/j.cnki.1000-5579.2018.01.012
    Abstract189)   HTML11)    PDF (2887KB)(926)

This paper examines the effect of the housing tenure structure of urban families on city-level housing price from the perspective of supply side.Combining the Urban Household Survey(UHS)data and city-level level statistics data, this paper constructs a panel data of 152 Chinese prefecture-level cities. The empirical research shows that higher tenant share of urban families has a significant negative effect on housing prices. If the local tenant share of urban families increases by 1%,urban housing prices will decrease by 0.2-0.3%.Further regional-level heterogeneity analysis shows that this effect is mainly manifest in eastern cities, but not in mid-western cities. In addition,in the cities where housing prices are higher, the tenant share of urban families has greater depressing effect on housing prices. The conclusion of this paper shows that speeding up the development of rental housing market can both increase housing options to urban residents and help to curb excessive speculation bubble.

In addition to its social attribute of emphasizing the promotion of housing security and fairness, the objective of housing policy has attained its economic attribute of accelerating economic development, which has ultimately become dominant. The housing policy of promoting the rate of homeownership meets these two attributes, making housing construction, consumption and regulation fit the economic attribute. If economic growth and macro-regulation relies too much on housing market, family asset is assigned too much to housing, and housing policy shifts between its two attributes, then the development of housing market would be instable and unbalanced, aggravating market fluctuations.Unstable housing market not only hinders the achievement of the objective of housing policy, but also causes social and economic problems.Government should emphasize more on social attribute in housing control policy and construct housing assistance system in multiple channels.Consequently,non-residential property can work for macroeconomic regulation and control to promote the stability of housing market, keep the two attributes of the objective of housing policy in balance and achieve the ideal housing for all residents.

    Abstract148)   HTML8)    PDF (2663KB)(651)

In recent years, social problems caused by the mismatch of housing security supply and demand have attracted much attention. An analysis of the housing survey data of Guangzhou residents in 2008 and 2011 from the perspective of life course shows that low income residents have the characteristics of low education level, low income, job instability, and high percentage of serious illness, disability or psychosis, divorce or the death of a spouse.Low income residents' property type security demand has an inverted U-shaped trend during their life cycles, which drops significantly after the age of thirty. Those families who have low education level, low incomes, job instability, and have school-age children would prefer to rent houses, and favor shorter commute.Social events, including dramatic changes of national policies, affect specific cohorts and groups' housing demand. These special families are affected much more negatively by such social events, and need more housing security. This paper suggests that the purpose of housing security is to provide support for low income families, the design of housing security system, the planning of security housing, and community services should take housing security objects' life course into consideration, and balance the supply and demand of security housing.

    Abstract124)   HTML6)    PDF (2712KB)(602)

Based on the spatial mismatch theory, the affordable housing mismatch can be defined as the ratio of non-covered public services in a certain range of affordable housing. This paper uses ArcGIS to analyze the spatial relationship between affordable housing and public service facilities in Xi'an.The results show that affordable housing mismatch degree of Xi'an decreased evenly in 2007-2011,and it gradually turned to adaptation in 2011-2015.As for spatial evolution, affordable housing mismatch is improved overall, but the effect of marginalization is increasing in the sense that the mismatch in Wei-yang District,Chang-an District,Ba-qiao District is more serious than the urban center of the city.Further research shows that there are three factors which influence the mismatch of affordable housing:the policy regulation is the major factor, the market evolution is the basic factor, and the individual choice is the internal reason. To improve the development of housing security and realize equalization of public services in different regions,we should make policy play a guiding role, integrate market mechanism to improve the efficiency of policy operation, enhance the structural reform of the supply side and achieve an effective supply of public service resources.

Contents ZHENG He's Voyages to the West and the “Kylin Diplomacy” in the Ming Dynasty

Journal of East China Normal University (Philosoph    2018, 50 (2): 1-11.   DOI: 10.16382/j.cnki.1000-5579.2018.02.001
    Abstract233)   HTML24)    PDF (2455KB)(1078)
When ZHENG He travelled to the West, the Ming Dynasty greatly developed not only political and economic but also cultural exchanges, including the exchange of animals such as kylins(actually giraffes) with Asian and African nations. ZHENG He's voyages can be divided into two stages, the first stage including the first three trips, while the second the last four trips. At the first stage, he mainly visited the nations in Southeast Asia and South Asia while at the second stage, he visited those far in West Asia and East Africa. The maritime "kylin tributes" related to ZHENG's voyages roughly happened seven times at the second stage. The later "kylin tributes" were also closely connected with voyages to the West. It was also said that the geographical expansion of ZHENG's last four voyages was directly related to "kylin tributes". In contrast to a nation's domestic affairs, diplomacy is aimed to deal with foreign affairs by peaceful means such as dispatching missions to resolve disputes in order to achieve the maximization of national interests. Emporer Yongle made foreign policies based on the diplomatic experiences of previous dynasties and his own experiences in East Asia and consequently implemented them in the South China Sea and the West at that time. Originally, ZHENG was sent to find the missing Emperor Jianwen and to fight against the remnant rebellions, but later his voyages were gradually aimed to search for rare animals and precious native products, protect the security of waterways, promote the national prestige in the South China Sea and establish diplomatic relations with non-vassal states. In the early Ming Dynasty, the consciousness of "tianxia"(under Heaven) and the distinction between Chinese and barbarians were deepened via a series of diplomatic ceremonies of "kylin tributes", which were not only performed for local natives but also politically served to attract neighboring countries as well as the states in South Asia and East Africa to join the ally of the "heavenly sovereign" so as to establish the central status of China in the tribute system in the Ming Dynasty.

    Abstract286)   HTML19)    PDF (2320KB)(492)
As an important political judgment, the statement that "socialism with Chinese characteristics has entered a new era" has profound philosophical implications, while as a historical narrative, it can be comprehended from three historic perspectives respectively at grand, middle and basic levels. As one of important theoretical contributions of the 19th CPC National Congress, the "four greats" based on the "new era" not only deepens the understanding of the historic mission of CPC(the Communist Party of China) but also provides important theoretical foundation for upholding and developing socialism with Chinese characteristics. As the summary of CPC's historic mission in the new era, the "four greats" embodies the general requirement of seeking happiness for people. To understand the scientific connotations and basic requirements of the "four greats" in a comprehensive and accurate manner, we should figure out the relationship between general historic mission and concrete missions at different historic stages, the relationship between China's great national rejuvenation and the historic mission of the proletariat, and other key theoretical issues. We should also pay attention to special practical issues such as establishing theoretical confidence and understanding the strategy of the "great struggle" and the foundation of the "great project" based on the new characteristics of the era.

To ensure the overall leadership of the Party through comprehensively governing the Party with strict discipline embodies the law of the modern construction of Chinese socialism and reflects the internal logic of the "four greats". It would be impossible to strengthen the overall leadership of the Party in the new era without comprehensively governing the Party with strict discipline. High standards and drastic measures must be systematically and comprehensively applied in the entire process and all aspects of strictly managing and governing the Party. We must make strictly governing the Party entirely function to improve the Party's leadership. We must create upright and honest political ecology to provide a sound environment for comprehensively governing the Party with strict discipline. We must prevent the formation of interest groups to preserve the advanced nature of the Party. We must prevent and eliminate various dual-character phenomena to eliminate blind areas of comprehensively governing the Party with strict discipline.

In the new era of socialism with special Chinese characteristics, the CPC should have new atmosphere, make a difference, and create a new situation in the new great project of constructing the Party. As the new era asks for more difficult missions from CPC, we must uphold and strengthen the overall leadership of the Party and comprehensively improve the Party's governing capacity and the ability to solve social contradictions and key issues. The construction of the Party is encountering more severe tests, so we must comprehensively govern the Party with strict discipline through institutional building and combating corruption and building a clean government. We must have courage to conduct self-revolution and improve the quality of the construction of the Party. As more serious requirements are proposed in terms of the Party-masses relationship, we must remain true to our original aspiration and keep our mission firmly in mind, adhere to the idea that people are the subject of the nation, regard people as the center, and make sure that the Party shares the same heart, fate and breath with people.

    Abstract260)   HTML3)    PDF (1481KB)(658)
"Skillful means" is one of the core concepts in Buddhism in general and in Mahayana in particular. While prajna means the wisdom of knowing Buddhist truth and "skillful means" is to know human culture and human proprieties. Hence, the organic integration between prajna and skillful means should be the reasonable direction for the construction of the doctrine of wisdom and ethics in Mahayana. However, prajna has been overestimated while skillful means have been ignored for a long time. Skillful Means Paramita Sutra was the first Mahayana sutra that constructed the doctrine of "skillful means" in a strict way, so that an examination of "skillful means" in this sutra has great significance in understanding the essence of the relationship between "transcending the secular world" and "entering the secular world" in Mahayana on the one hand and the transformation of Chinese Buddhism in modern times.

Paramārtha was born in Ujayana and he traveled to many nations surrounding Ujayana in Western India, where the doctrines of sam-matīya were widely preached. Paramārtha translated a series of works of sam-matīya such as Clearly Understanding the Disciplines in 22 Verses, Abhidharm on Bring Peace to the World, and wrote and lectured on Annotations to Clearly Understanding. This shows his proficiency in sam-matīya disciplines. Proposed in Clearly Understanding and On Four Truths, the special four good roots of "endurance, name, appearance, laukikāgradharma" are included in the "four skillful means of perfumation" in Vidyanirdesa-sastra. Paramārtha accepted and preached the unique sam-matīya view of history and time, including "the present kalpa is the ninth kalpa", and there are "seven hundred years" away from the ninth kalpa. Therefore, it is plausible to conclude that Paramārtha adhered to sam-matīya.

Daoxuan is mainly praised for his obedience to Buddhist disciplines and his historical writings. However, a careful reading of his works will tell us that Daoxuan held a strong belief in Buddhist epiphany and made great efforts to build a "perfect" Buddhist world. His records of epiphany show that Daoxuan interpreted Buddhist history and figures in a particular way. The stories of Buddhist epiphany not only recorded his personal experience, but also were used to demonstrate the holiness of Buddhism. With their strong mysterious color, they helped Daoxuan construct and preach a more sacred Buddhism as the "center of the universe". Examining the records of epiphany related to Daoxuan, we can also see that he was a Buddhist master above all, and then he was respected as the founder of Vinaya school of Chinese Buddhism and a historian of Buddhism.

    Abstract231)   HTML3)    PDF (1611KB)(810)
In recent years, research on the doctrine of daotong, that is, the "transmission of Confucian orthodox teachings", has been quite fruitful. The new discovery of a document by Charles Hartman, an American scholar, provides important clues and proofs for the generation and development of the doctrine of daotong in the Song Dynasty on the one hand and the deep cultural and political implication in ZHU Xi's doctrine of daotong. One of the important aspects of daotong is the transmission of Confucian culture, thought and theories. It is generally believed that Mencius was the first person who clearly delineated Confucian daotong, HAN Yu then gave it a clear definition, and ZHU Xi completed it. Promoting the status of Confucius above Yao and Shun, and deliberately distinguishing dao from situational potentiality, ZHU Xi's doctrine of daotong demonstrated that the subjectivity consciousness of the intellectuals in the Song Dynasty became mature from awakening. The CHENG brothers occupy a very important position in ZHU Xi's doctrine of daotong. For ZHU Xi, the CHENG brothers were the direct inheritors of Confucian daotong, thus establishing the authentic and dominant position of the learning of Dao(Neo-Confucianism) in the whole lineage of Confucian daotong. From then on, the dispute about daotong was solved. Correspondingly, Neo-Confucians also obtained the power of discourse in daotong and even the whole Confucianism. ZHU Xi affirmed that he was the successor to the CHENG brothers. In this way, he completed the whole lineage of daotong in the Song Dynasty. Thus, defending the purity and authority of Confucian daotong became his inescapable mission in ZHU Xi's whole life.

Constant advancing with the time constitutes the vitality of thought. In the Han Dynasty, the policy of advocating Confucianism only while rejecting all other doctrines was performed. This was due to the transformation from cultural Confucianism to political Confucianism in pre-Qin. This transformation advanced pre-Qin Confucianism to cultural Confucianism of mankind beyond particular times on the one hand, and also political Confucianism closely related to the life world. This transformation made later development of Confucianism possible. In addition, we can also learn much from this historical transformation for creative transformation and innovative development of Chinese traditional culture in the "new era".

Metaphysical Dimension of “Desiring for Humanity” in Classical Confucianism

    Abstract176)   HTML9)    PDF (1044KB)(352)
Classical Confucianism pays more attention to "desire for humanity" than to "material desire". There are a number of differences between material desire and desire for humanity:the former is material, deficient, egoist, finite and destined, while the latter is moral, sufficient, altruist, infinite and determined by nature. Due to the emphasis on material desire and consequently knowing and utilizing the outside world, a tradition of egocentrism forms in Western philosophy. Although Western metaphysics seeks to transcend reality, reality here mainly means the outside world rather than the self. In contrast, classical Confucianism underscores desire for humanity, that is, benevolence for others. Since the others are in reality, what metaphysics based on desire for humanity attempts to transcend is the self rather than the outside world. In this sense, classical Confucianism creates a metaphysics distinctive from that in the West.

From the perspective of the "Eastward Spread of Western learning", KANG You-wei's Deep Meaning of Mencius had distinct characteristics of the times in the late Qing Dynasty. In The Deep Meaning of Mencius, KANG integrated Chinese tradition with Western evolutionism. He discovered in Mencius the applicability of evolutionism in China, and put forward his evolutionism of "three eras", emphasizing "time", "benevolence" and periodical development. KANG also tried to rectify evolutionism translated and advocated by YAN Fu. Representing the dual variation between tradition and times, and reflecting the wisdom and courage of integrating Chinese and Western thoughts, KANG's evolutionism in The Deep Meaning of Mencius is significant for us to deal with Chinese and Western cultures.

    Abstract182)   HTML4)    PDF (1377KB)(754)
Evolutionism is essential to modern values. Since the Enlightenment, it has become the greatest ideological myth with the great victory of modernity. As a distinctive thinker against the trend of the time, ZHANG Tai-yang unfolded his critique against modernity, especially social progressivism and progressivism in his doctrine of "double evolution". Drawing up Buddhism and Zhuangzi, his dialectics of "good and evil, misery and happiness evolving together" attacks the doctrine of development and teleology of Hegel's dialectics, and deconstructs the linear development in evolutionism. During the enlightenment in the late Qing Dynasty, this doctrine had great significance in reflecting modernity and breaking the confusion of modernity. Reflecting upon evolutionism and progressivism with the dialectical wisdom of Buddhism and Daoism, ZHANG conducted a dialogue between the tradition of Buddhism and Daoism on the one hand and Western modernity on the other. He attacks monism with pluralism, optimism of progressivism with pessimism of Buddhism, Hegel's doctrine of development with Zhuangzi's relativism, and the linear progressivism with the dialectics of moving forward and back, revealing the two faces of evolution and the dialectics of good and evil, moving ahead and retreat and breaking the ideological myth of progressivism. It represents the dimension of criticizing modernity with tradition besides the mainstream of enlightenment in China.

    Abstract135)   HTML4)    PDF (2330KB)(596)
When discussing whether representative democracy is suitable for China, ZHANG Tai-yan thought that representative democracy is related to the feudal system in the West in middle ages, but after the Wei-jin and Southern and Northern Dynasties, no hereditary power existed in China, so it's unsuitable to transplant the representative system from the West, which will form a special power group. Besides, ZHANG pointed out that system construction should be in accordance with the fundamental conditions in China. Under the situation that China was a large country with vast land and millions of people and the development of different regions was imbalanced, those who were possible to be elected as representatives could only be the rich who would not voice for the rights of common people. Therefore, he designed an ideal system, hoping that this system can really embody democracy, overcome the defects of modern capitalist regime, so as to the idea of civil power can be actually rooted in China on the one hand and national unity and political identity can be achieved on the other.

Containing a great amount of embryonic forms of mythical novels and stories, the geographical books in the Six Dynasties provide clues for the study of the nature and spread of mythical novels. By analyzing the mythical records of caves in the geographical books, this papers examines the following three elements:first, the "facts" foundation and narrative modes of the construction of cave stories; second, the categories and local features of cave stories; third, the knowledge revealed in mythical novels and the historical features of local writing. We find that mythical novels are actually "fragments" of geographical books in the Six Dynasties rather than literary fictions. The various caves in the geographical books in the Six Dynasties are sacred sites and monuments created by legends and stories rather than objects of natural geography. By studying the cave stories in the geographical books and mythical novels in the Six Dynasties, we can not only compile and restore the lost texts, but understand better the source, nature and historical context of mythical novels as well.

CAI Yuan-pei and his utopian novel New Year's Dream were the important beginning of the dialogue between modern Confucianism and socialism. The national imagination of Confucian intellectuals has undergone a profound transformation, particularly in the combination of utopian socialism and Confucian utopia of "great harmony", and the communication between the concept of revolution in the West and that in the learning of gongyang. Through the deep dialogue between Chinese and Western ideas of utopia, Chinese intellectuals shaped a kind of oriental aesthetics of humanism, which showed the power of constructing human subjectivity and utopian ideals. It contained the unique contribution of Confucianism and Chinese intellectuals to socialism.

At different stages of economic development, the relationship between land urbanization and environmental quality is different. When the economy is at its primary stage, land urbanization depends on its scale expansion, and the environmental quality is in a declining trend. The change direction of land urbanization rate and environmental quality is reversed. When the economy goes to the advanced stage, land urbanization is based on quality improvement. While environmental quality demand is enhanced, the government invests more in environmental protection. So the change direction of land urbanization rate and environmental quality will be consistent. At the present stage of our country, the relationship between land urbanization rate and environmental quality is overall negative in the transition from stage I to stage Ⅱ. Therefore, the government should vigorously promote the construction of green urbanization, build green production mode, and establish a green urbanization development system. At the same time, the government should support green urbanization by strengthening the land supply side reform.

    Abstract140)   HTML10)    PDF (1900KB)(430)

The key to solve the housing problem of migrant workers is to realize the balance matching between housing consumption intention and housing consumption capacity. At present, the housing consumption of migrant workers is very strong, but their housing consumption capacity is insufficient. In addition, there are fewer migrant workers who rely on the housing provident fund to buy houses. The calculation of housing price to income ratio of migrant workers in different cities shows that migrant workers' housing consumption capacity presents urban hierarchical features. It is very difficult for migrant workers to have their houses in big cities, but it is possible to realize their house dream in small cities like three or four line cities. Utilizing the binary logistic regression model, the empirical analysis of micro data shows that the influence of the housing provident fund on housing purchasing, including migrant workers' housing consumption, has a layered characteristics. In other words, regional differences exist between various cities. As an important housing safeguard, housing provident fund should effectively benefit migrant workers, so as to improve their housing consumption capacity and help them realize their urban dream of "having a house in the city". Therefore, in the process of reform, the policies of the housing provident fund system should fit the concrete situation of a city so as to accurately support the housing consumption of migrant workers, thus gradually realizing the new "people-oriented" urbanization.

Using the dynamic monitoring data of flouting population in 2014, and using multiple logistic regression to analyze the intergenerational differences of migrant workers' location preference for house purchasing or building, we find that the main house purchasing preferences of migrant workers include three types:house building in home villages, house purchasing in hometown and house purchasing near workplace. New generation of migrant workers prefers house purchasing in hometown, but old generation prefers house building in home villages and housing purchasing near workplace. There is no significant intergenerational difference between two generations. The income of the old generation is higher, and their purchasing power is stronger. A large proportion of migrant workers of the two generations who prefer house building in hometown shows that the dual system of the urban and the rural is still an obstacle for migrant workers to settle down in cities. The new generation of migrant workers tends to settle down in cities where they work, but they have to return and purchase house or building their house in hometown because of their inadequate purchasing power.

    Abstract271)   HTML120)    PDF (966KB)(570)
XI Jin-ping's thought on socialism with Chinese characteristics for a new era contains Chinese wisdom for the development of socialism in the world, Chinese experience of realizing modernization in a developing country, and Chinese solution to the global governing. It clarifies the theoretical puzzlement of "the end of history", "the clash of civilizations" and "Western centrism", so that it plays an important role in human intellectual history. Therefore, one should adopt an international vision and a global perspective to understand and evaluate the theoretical significance and practical value of XI Jin-ping's thought on socialism with Chinese characteristics for a new era.

It is a historical conclusion as well as a call of the time to regard the ideological construction as the fundamental construction of the Party. Since ideal and faith are our root and soul, we must hold high the banner of faith. We must arm ourselves with theories by reading and studying original works and investigating basic principles so that we can realize genuine learning, genuine knowledge, real faith and actual application. Attaching great importance to the integration of the Party spirit education and moral cultivation is essential to XI Jin-ping's thought of an all-out effort to enforce strict Party discipline. It also embodies the inheritance and development of the Party's ideological construction.

    Abstract198)   HTML5)    PDF (3498KB)(709)
The issue concerning philosophy of social sciences and its methodology is only the focus of current theoretical philosophy and practical philosophy. It also has become an intellectual platform and a workplace for cross-discipline practice. It can be traced back to the distinction, as well as the connection, between the explanation and understanding, in Neo-Kantianism, which goes through the issue of methodology of social sciences from beginning to end. This structure also forms a contrast with causal research pattern and normative research pattern in current philosophical discussions of social sciences. If practical reasoning is the hub and axis that runs through the history from Aristotle's practical philosophy to philosophy of action in Wittgenstein and his disciples, normative reasons, as well as an independent and self-sufficient concept of norm, seems to direct recent debates on philosophy of social sciences. In order to create an important opportunity to restart, philosophy of social sciences and its methodology in the Chinese context should face the multi-dimensional intellectual ecology of current methodology of social sciences that shows objectivity, normativity and complexity on the one hand and stick to the practical approach of action analysis based on the concept of "rationality" and case orientation on the other.

    Abstract118)   HTML3)    PDF (1744KB)(451)
In World War I, Russia suffered from successive military defeats and domestic revolutions. As the highest administrative executive organ in Russia during the War, the Council of Ministers was confronted with lots of formidable tasks. It did make great efforts to solve the coordination of relevant departments, arms supplies, sources of troops and transportation problems, which had a direct impact on the outcome of the war in Russia. By analyzing the effect of the Council of Ministers during the War, we can draw a conclusion that the Council of Ministers failed to provide strong support for the front military activities of Russia, and the Czar, the Queen Group, the Council of Ministers itself and other factors had influence on the activities of the Council. The study of the military countermeasures, as well as their results, of the Russian Council of Ministers during World War I provides us with new research materials and perspectives for further examination of the causes of the outbreak of October Revolution and the end of the reign of Romanov dynasty in Russia.

    Abstract174)   HTML8)    PDF (2997KB)(638)
China's national security strategy began to undergo a dramatic transformation in the middle of 1960s, which finally resulted in a historic shift of China's foreign policy in the early 1970s, that is, the Sino-US relations shifting from confrontation to reconciliation. Began roughly from 1964-1965, this transformation was mainly initiated and implemented in the interaction of the following two systems. One is the system of Sino-U.S. security relations and Sino-Soviet relations constructed in the Cold War system, and the other is China's strategic decision-making system, which gradually formed through handling the wars, crises and defense affairs after the founding of the People's Republic of China. It will be very helpful for understanding the evolution and basic characteristics of China's strategic decision-making in the Cold War to deeply analyze and interpret the transformation of these two systems since the mid-1960s and the interaction between them, and in particular, how this interaction has triggered and promoted the transformation of China's security strategy and foreign policy. This study will also provide a more accurate start point to interpret why the establishment of Sino-U.S. diplomatic relations(1969-1978) and the "normalization" of Sino-Soviet relations(1979-1989) respectively took almost ten years.

Logic Evolution of Marx' Criticism of Religion

    Abstract200)   HTML3)    PDF (1424KB)(461)
Marx' criticism of religion is by no means fragmentary; on the contrary, it constitutes a logical evolution from the criticism of religion to class conflicts and to the criticism of a political nation and then to the criticism of civil society. Marx examined the criticism of religion before, pointing out that the criticism of religion should not limit itself to the criticism of religion itself but instead should also extend to the secular dimension to grasp the essence of a political nation. The form of a political state hasn't eliminated religious conflicts, whose premise lies in the elimination of class conflicts. Although political emancipation confirms the content of "human rights"in a civil society, it makes "human rights" serve as the tool of "civil rights" in a political state. This upside-down phenomenon reflects the objective opposition between a political state and a civil society and also demonstrates that political emancipation does not mean the emancipation of man. The revolution of a civil society is to reconstruct it by reconstructing its property relationship.

In 1960s, the Catholic Paulus-Gesellschaft organized a series of conferences of the dialogue between "Christians and Marxists", which, with the spread and comments via public media, were socially influential and historically significant. By reviewing the historical context of this series of conferences and examining its themes, ideological background and historical causes, this article explores the possibility of communication, mutual understanding and reaching consensus to some extent between Marxism and Christianity. When globalization has already been a trend today, discourse power in various contexts still needs to be expressed, communicated, understood and renewed in "dialogues" to achieve the grand target of building "a community of shared future for mankind".

A natural language logic is based on the grammar of the language. Chinese logic, which is based on Chinese grammar, is thus different from Greek logic. Isostructural reasoning is universal to human species as it has a biological origin. Chinese people, however, are especially good at and fond of making isostructural inference because the isostructural principle in Chinese grammar has shaped the way Chinese people think and reason, which is reinforced by the homophonic association mechanism in Chinese linguistics. These linguistic factors have contributed to the isostructural reasoning. Isostructure and root-branch function as the two main categories of thinking in Chinese logic. In addition, isostructural reasoning and comparative reasoning constitute the two fundamental procedures of Chinese reasoning.

    Abstract258)   HTML2)    PDF (1420KB)(469)
A historical examination of "speech" and "act" in a conceptual network of "thinking", "mind", "body", "society" and "material" reveals that there are plenty of ways to understand them. According to the primitive concept of mantra, speech can directly influence material without the medium of act. According to the concept of karma in Buddhism, "mind", "speech" and "body" are a set of parallel concepts, while "act" is their upperseat concept. Christianity attaches great importance to the role of speech, believing that it directly creates body, material and act. "Speech" and "act" are dichotomous concepts in Confucian political philosophy and ethics. Psychological behaviorism holds that speech is the act of body under conditioned stimulus. Daily language schools claim that speech is act from the perspective opposing logic positivism. While body linguistics considers act as a subtype of speech from the perspective of semiotics. From the perspective of existentialism, physical phenomenology reduces speech to a kind of act. In short, a historical study of concepts should pay attention to conceptual relationship rather than merely one concept.

Disyllabification is a particular linguistic phenomenon, which appeared in the evolution of Chinese in middle ages. As a basic form of Chinese rhythm, it is one of the starting points of the study of Chinese rhythmic syntax. It is generally recognized that disyllabification is quite simple, since it is just a disyllabic cluster and a main form of Chinese words. However, it is by no means simple since from a diachronic and dynamic perspective disyllabification has at least two important results:the effect of pivot in constructing Chinese hierarchical system, and the effect of integration in shaping Chinese morphology.

    Abstract183)   HTML4)    PDF (2007KB)(313)

Based on the contract as a reference point theory, this paper takes the data of China's listed companies from 2009 to 2014 as samples to study the relationships among contract reference points, compensation incentives and excess perquisites. We find that there is a positive relationship between contract reference points and excess perquisites; compensation incentives benefit to reduce excess perquisites, and play a moderator role in inhibiting the relationship between contract reference points and excess perquisites, with significant differences due to the elements of companies' ownership and manager market degree. The study also shows that compensation incentives of state-owned listed companies have a negative adjustment effect on the relationship between contract reference points and excess perquisites after the implementation of the "eight regulations" policy. The research findings can provide relevant evidences that support and guide how to design the contracts of executive compensations reasonably and solve the problem of excess perquisites effectively.

    Abstract137)   HTML3)    PDF (2019KB)(353)

From the perspective of behavioral economic theory, this paper takes agency theory and cognitive evaluation theory as the basis, selects the data of China's listed companies for 2008-2015 years as the sample, and empirically studies the relationship among the peer reference gap, CEO external pressure and the quality of accounting information. The results show that:(1) the greater peer reference gap of CEO, the lower the quality of accounting information; (2) the pressure of external debt will strengthen the relationship between the peer reference gap and the quality of accounting information, which has the crowding-out effect; the pressure of analyst coverage will inhibit it, which has the governance effect. After considering endogenous problems, the above conclusions are still true. Further studies have found that the crowding-out effect of CEO external pressure on the relationship between the reference gap and the quality of accounting information is more significant in the state-owned enterprises and the short-term debt samples.

    Abstract198)   HTML6)    PDF (1659KB)(519)
The right to be forgotten is a right to cope with the threat caused by modern IT, and also an expansion of traditional right of information deletion. In the era of big data, the problem of the right to be forgotten has become more pressing. As for system constitution, personal information subject is the subject of the right to be forgotten, the subject of duty is the information controller, and the object of right is the specific personal network information. Due to different understanding of the right of privacy and the freedom of expression, the European Union and the United States have different views on the theoretical basis and the protection path of the right to be forgotten. Based on the reality of China, the existing judicial decisions and the perspective of "personality interest", the right to be forgotten should be identified as the right of personal information rather than the right of privacy. Therefore, we should make The Protection of Personal Information Law based on the existing Tort Liability Law and other related laws as well as the foreseeable Civil Law, so that we can completely localize the way to protect the right to be forgotten.

There is no clear legal foundation for procedures for application of employment prohibition in China's Criminal Law, which has influenced the effect of application of employment prohibition. Although there is something in common between employment prohibition and restraining order, they have more differences rather than similarities, so that there should be independent procedures for application of employment prohibition. In order to secure fair and adequate application of employment prohibition, subjects initiating and participating such application should be diversified and social investigation system should be introduced. The time of announcing employment prohibition and the execution subject should be flexible according to the fact that the prohibited person is a natural person or a unit, combining the content of the prohibited issue. In addition, the corresponding system of regaining the right to employment should be established. For the purpose of balancing freedom and order, the prohibited person should be endowed with rights to appeal and complaint.

In judicial practice, there are different disposals for the same or similar behaviors of village officials. This is mainly because of the dual identities of village officials and the complicated property related in the investigation. To differentiate public business and village business is the premise of determining the nature of the crime committed by village officials. We should adopt methods of systemic and purpose analyses, when judging whether a village official is helping the government handle administrative matters or not. In terms of the property of capitals, the fund of "one matter one discussion" is general national transfer payment. Village officials who gained by cheating, occupied and misappropriated the fund of "one matter one discussion" should be punished as the crime of corruption and embezzlement of public funds.

    Abstract200)   HTML11)    PDF (1512KB)(559)
As a critic of the bourgeoisie ideology and a rival of the capitalist system, socialism should not only eliminate material poverty and labor enforcement by developing productivity, but also realize the ideal of both individual development in an all-round way and the free union of individuals by reforming social system. However, traditional socialist theories focus too much on the former while ignore the latter. While inheriting the enlightenment tradition of the bourgeoisie, German classical philosophy goes beyond the limitation of utilitarianism in the enlightenment tradition of England and France by clearly regarding freedom at the level of self-determination as the core of human liberation. Inheriting the principle of individual autonomy in German classical philosophy, Marx maintains that human freedom does not equal to knowing nature and controlling the production process; on the contrary, it should be understood as the development of human beings themselves and their co-control of the production process. Although he claims that the development of human ability to know and change nature is indispensable for human liberation, Marx emphasizes that the realm of freedom is actually on the other shore of labor and the realm of necessity. In other words, we can achieve real freedom only in voluntary activities aiming to develop ourselves. This conceptual distinction between cognitive freedom and practical freedom, and the recognition that the latter is prior to the former should be confirmed again as the core and foundation of socialism in the 21st century. Under the guidance of the development ideal of "regarding people as the center", the practice of socialism with Chinese characteristics in a new era will demonstrate that socialism is essentially the great course of human liberation.

    Abstract189)   HTML7)    PDF (1447KB)(558)
General intellect is a significant concept developed by Marx in his "Fragment on Machines". Etymologically speaking, it may be influenced by Hodgskin and some theories of technology. Social agents play a decisive role in the creation and development of general intellect. Due to different social conditions, general intellect functions in different ways: it is directly united with labor in pre-capitalism; their separation starts in simple co-operation of capitalism, develops in manufacture(general intellect of collective laborers) and fully completes in large-scale mechanized industry(fixed capital). General intellect and its capitalist possession are not the same thing. When he claims that Marxian general intellect is simply the scientific power objectified in fixed capital, Paolo Virno is completely wrong since he has confused general intellect with its capitalist possession. However, Marxian analysis on the relation between general intellect and capitalist value production is not mature in the "Fragment on Machines", and his argument on capitalist collapse is not tenable, which has been overcome in Das Kapital.

    Abstract191)   HTML6)    PDF (1659KB)(445)
Shaftesbury inherits the Neo-Platonist doctrine of "inward form" and develops his own moral philosophy and aesthetic discourse centering on emotions and Bildung, which also defends the value of human community by "divine order". Shaftesbury's philosophy of "character" shows the earliest recognition of individualism and touches the issue of the cultivation of "gentlemen" and "civil philosophy", in which aesthetic activities and emotional cultivation are important. The combination of anthropology and theology in the views of moral and aesthetic Bildung forms his unique natural theology based on humanism. When the human ethical world is increasingly separated by postmodernism and deconstructionism today, Shaftesbury's thinking about moral sense and emotional capacity just shows one of the origins of modern moral philosophy, and also provides us with an old while innovative path to the reflection on the declining tradition of Bildung.

    Abstract192)   HTML4)    PDF (2885KB)(592)
The gentry group, with the gradual development for several centuries, had evolved into the class of great clans in the Wei and Jin Dynasties. Together with the ruthless struggle for political power, the class of great clans became much stronger and developed steadily. At the beginning of the Western Jin Dynasty, most generals and ministers were from the great clans, who were either the high officials of the Wei Dynasty or the descendants of them. Although it seemed to be paradoxical, class solidification and dynastic replacement coexisted in medieval China. As the means of dynastic replacement with the minimum cost, the crown abdication greatly conformed to the aristocratic interests and gradually became the political spirit that were widely accepted by the gentry class. The substitution pattern of imperial power was closely related to the dominant social strata. The steady development of the great clans, the ripe theory of crown abdication, and the practice of different patterns of abdication-these three factors closely worked together so as to open the curtain of medieval aristocratic society.

This paper studies the Records of Emperor Xian's Daily Life(Xiandi Qijuzhu) based on its extant fragments. It records the history of Emperor Xian in the Han Dynasty in a chronological order. It begins from the 6st year of Zhongping(189 C.E.), or more exactly, probably begins with the "Luoyang Incident in August", which was closely related to Emperor Xian's accession to the throne. It doesn't end in the 1st year of Yankang(220 C.E.) when the Han Dynasty was replaced by the Wei Dynasty. Rather, it ends in February of the 21st year of Jian'an(216 C.E.), marked by the event that "Emperor Xian will no longer issue proclamations". Featured by the annalistic style, it mainly records the establishment, development and the end of the power of Emperor Xian. It attaches great importance to the achievement of Emperor Xian's court in the institutional constructions as well as harmonizing cosmos order. It also reveals the continuity of history in Emperor Xian's regime and its significance of the time. The writing of the book initiated a new tradition of the writing of Qijuzhu in medieval China, i.e., "writing by a close courtier".

The contest for heavenly mandate and legitimacy is an important feature of the Three Kingdoms Period. In order to declare their legitimacy, the States Wei, Shu and Wu not only used the ceremony of abdication, sublimed fetes and other etiquettes, but also took advantage of the symbolization in their local administrative plans. The thirteen-state system had been performed for a long time in the Eastern Han Dynasty. In the 18th year of Jian'an(213 C.E.), CAO Cao changed the local administrative system from thirteen-state to nine-state with reference to Yu Gong in order to increase his influence as the state governor of Jizhou. During the period that the Han Dynasty was replaced by the Wei, CAO Pei, to declare that the Wei power inherit the legitimacy of the Eastern Han Dynasty, restored to the thirteen-state system and continued the actual enfeoffment in the Eastern Han Dynasty, locating fiefdoms in certain areas under administration. In the early years of the States Wu and Shu, the Emperors also "restored" to the thirteen-state system of the Eastern Han Dynasty to declare their legitimacy. However, the territories of the States Wu and Shu were smaller, so that some virtual "states" and "fiefdoms" were established outside their boundaries. The different ways to embody the order of Tianxia in local administrative systems in the Three Kingdoms Period set paradigms for the Eastern Jin Dynasty and the Sixteen Kingdoms Period.

From the enfeoffment during the years of Taishi to the reform in the 3rd year of Xianning and then to the 3rd year of Taikang when the Prince You of Qi was sent to his own fiefdom by force, it is evident that Emperor Wu was intended and determined to build a feudal system of five levels similar to that of the Zhou Dynasty by sending royal members to different fiefdoms. In the end of the 10th year of Taikang, Emperor Wu established "super kingdoms" over the "great kingdoms" to enfeoff the princes. His grown-up princes were enfeoffed to the states of Yong, Jing and Yang so as to form the pattern of protecting the capital Luoyang, which can be regarded as the further development of the feudal system of five levels. The vast territories and large populations of the feudal states of princes, as well as princes being sent to important feudal states—such phenomena had never seen since the early years of the Han Dynasty. On the one hand, Emperor Wu's feudal system of five levels was strongly influenced by the Confucian ideal; on the other hand, it was also a response to the realistic demand of rising the imperial power and keeping the throne to Emperor Wu's son Emperor Hui and his grandson. This system, as the profound background of political disputes at that time, is the key to understand the political system of Emperor Wu's court. Moreover, it also significant to study the rise and fall of the imperial relative YANG Jun, which was closely related to the reform during the years of Xianning and the enfeoffment during the years of Taikang.

This paper studies the formation the modern connotation of the term "wenxue"(literature) as the result of the co-construction of Catholicism in the late Ming Dynasty and Christianity in the late Qing Dynasty. In his books Xixuefan and Zhifang Waiji published in 1623, Guilio Aleni coined the term "wenyi zhi xue", which aims to include various types of poems and argumentative writings. In YANG Ting-yun's posthumous work Daiyi Xupian published in 1635, Aleni's "wenxue zhi xue" in Xixuefan was quoted and replaced by "wenxue", which was the first time that the term "wenxue" obtained its new meaning different from its traditional one as Confucian classics or cultivation since the Analects. YANG's usage was continued by Christian commissionaires such as Joseph Adkins, who also used "wenxue" in his Liuhe Congtan to include epics, tragedies and comedies, historical records and even rhetoric in the Western tradition. The modern connotation of "wenxue" has gradually formed since then and with its application in WEI Yuan's Records and Maps of the World, and reformers and scholars such as LIANG Qi-chao and WANG Guo-wei, "wenxue" has made contribution to China's modernity.

In effect, as for his influence on the communication between the Eastern and Western civilizations, he did has some direct and specific factual connections with Chinese culture. Who put forward the influential "Bet on God" first? Based on related original texts, this paper explores the background and intellectual implications of Diego de Pantoja's "Bet on God" in Chinese context and Pascal's doctrine of "gambling", trying to figure out the possible influence between them. Then this paper examines the connection between Pascal and the religions in Chinese society in terms of moral theology, the chronological study of the Bible and the arguments for the existence of God and analyzes the triangle relations among Leibniz, Pascal and the Jesuits in China, hoping to discover the real Pascal in China.

The Literary Trend of “Post-theory” and Its New Writing Forms
    LIU Yang
Journal of East China Normal University (Philosoph    2018, 50 (4): 93-100.   DOI: 10.16382/j.cnki.1000-5579.2018.04.010
    Abstract142)   HTML12)    PDF (1598KB)(392)

The practice of "theory", which has been popular for more than half a century, reveals that the metaphysical self-evidence performativity is essentially concealed in constativity. A theory of performativity cannot exclude fiction, which as the pretending unity of performativity and constativity is to be disenchanted. As fiction embodies the substitution nature of language as a symbol system, the bifurcation of performativity and constativity is inherent in discourse. Therefore, a "theory" is self-deconstructive when it reveals such bifurcation: If we believe what it says, then we cannot accept it easily. It is this paradox that gradually leads to reflection on the practice of "theory" and then "post-theory". A "post-theory" not only admits the bifurcation of performativity and constativity, but also makes it constructive rather than deconstructive. Literary writing is good at such practice and willing to perform it, since the combination of these two aspects is in line with the nature of literature as symbolic defamiliarization. In this sense, the practice of "post-theory" must be literary writing instead of any theory of capitalized cultural criticism. The rebirth of a literary theory must lie in the new forms of "deconstructive-constructive" writing, including involved writing, which reveals performativtiy to constativity so that the latter actively establishes its observation framework, and tropological writing, which actively turns to a new perspective when realizing the relativity of a performative point of view. This brings us an opportunity of localization if we correspondently examine possible contribution of zawen essays to "post-theory" and possible combination of Chinese stories and "post-theory".

    Abstract218)   HTML10)    PDF (2550KB)(1243)
When the class differentiation is becoming more and more obvious in current China, the role of cultural capital in educational inequality and social stratification has attracted scholars' extensive attention. This paper compares the operation logic of cultural capital in the middle class and working class families so as to explore how the intergenerational transmission of cultural capital shapes the class difference and promotes social class reproduction. The result shows that middle class and working class parents have different behavioral patterns in the intergenerational transmission of cultural capital and the "triple reproduction" of cultural capital is realized in family, school, and educational institutions. It results in children's differences in terms of their cognitive and non-cognitive abilities. Both parents and children are participants in educational inequality and social reproduction. The intergenerational transmission of cultural capital further defines class boundaries, increases class gaps and inequality, reduces class mobility, and even forms class barriers.

    Abstract109)   HTML5)    PDF (2096KB)(335)
Based on the interview with new-middle class consumers in Shanghai, this paper shows that the family-mediated relationship between state and consumer is resolved and concealed in the complicate interaction among state, family and consumer. Nowadays, the tension between state and consumer can be observed in the following two aspects. Firstly, the weakness of societalization in the institutions of provision of public consumer goods causes the new-middle class consumers' relative poverty of disposable income and time, which hinders "de-familization" consumption, the explosion of effective demand of the new-middle class consumers and consequently the achievement of the national target of "expanding domestic demand". Secondly, in the promotion of state's individualization of the provision of public consumer goods, Chinese consumers, actually looking forward to "de-familization", have to face the reality of "familization" and fall into the entanglement of relationships among family members, which cast a shadow over the national governance target of "maintaining social stability". Therefore, the reconstruction of state-consumer relationship should focus on family and its change.

    Abstract140)   HTML5)    PDF (1484KB)(450)

Unauthorized building demolition in urban villages is not only one of the most concerned issues in the reconstruction of the urban village, but also one of the main tasks of the city construction in urban China in recent years. Taking M village as an example, which is the largest urban village in Shanghai, this paper tries to rethink the housing problem of internal migrants and the corresponding urban governance logic. As a legal means of urban governance and environmental regulation, unauthorized building demolition in urban villages is endowed with unquestionable legitimacy and rationality. Nevertheless, it is also a comprehensive clean-up and rectification of the internal original social ecological structure in an urban village. For those internal migrants living in the urban village, such kind of "legal expulsion" has strengthened the institutional social exclusion. It indicates the fragility and uncertainty of the urban living life, and even to a certain extent, it has aggravated the fracture and fragmentation of the society.

The public housing of urban low-income groups is gradually aging. The double qualification of household registration status and housing welfare make them not simply weak in the process of gaming with the local government. Although only having the "insufficient" residence right, the low-income groups, based on the public housing community location superiority to seek the housing power maximization, "kidnaps" the government no matter with the social morals public opinion or in terms of economic returns. The lack of land development in publicly owned housing communities in the short term makes the local government have less institutional motivation to govern the community of public housing, which is reflected on the fact that the investment in the community management, repair and maintenance of the public housing is negative.

    Abstract115)   HTML3)    PDF (1428KB)(352)

Under the new pattern of comprehensive opening up, transformation of China's foreign economic development mode has entered into a new era. Therefore, on the basis of evaluating the existing achievements, it is very necessary to make a macro analysis on how to accelerate the transformation of China's foreign economic development mode, combining with new requirements in the new era. The comprehensive evaluation about transformation achievements of China's foreign economic development mode is still at an exploratory stage, and related evaluation mainly pays attention to foreign trade. So building a more comprehensive evaluation index system, including foreign investment and financing, international economic cooperation, resource and environment, and then measuring transformation achievements based on the Principal Component Analysis(PCA), can not only find the overall optimization process of China's foreign economic development mode transformation in the past more than 10 years, but also make clear the transformation orientation in the future. In the new pattern of opening up, China, to speed up foreign economic development mode transformation, should adhere to five development concepts, form a linkage mechanism with the transformation of domestic economic development mode, take the global value chain division system as a basis, stick to the general tone of making progress while maintaining stability, focus on the main line of structural reform of supply side, and deal with preferentially the economic and trade relations between China and the United States.

    Abstract162)   HTML8)    PDF (1138KB)(340)

A theoretical model is constructed from the perspective of baseline conditions, a single external FTA, and a dual external FTA to analyze the expansion mechanism of free trade agreements, and particularly the impact of external free trade agreements on the parties of the ongoing FTA negotiations. The results show that market size, marginal production costs, and transportation costs(freight and customs duties) between the two parties are important factors affecting FTA negotiations. Compared with the baseline scenario, when there is a single external FTA, the party that has signed FTA with others increase its motivation to sign FTA, while the party without external FTA members decreases its incentives to sign FTA. In the case of a dual external FTA, the motivation for negotiating new FTA between the two parties has increased, which leads to the continued expansion of the FTA.

The results show that executive compensation incentives can promote the improvement of corporate social responsibility performance and promote corporate social responsibility, while industry competition will inhibit executive compensation incentives for the implementation of corporate social responsibility performance. Having external constraints on the company, higher industry competitiveness will play a role without executive compensation incentives.

    Abstract91)   HTML4)    PDF (1729KB)(381)

The formulation of industrial policy is a process of public choice. Industrial policy effectiveness is influenced by the relationship between policy supply and policy demand and depends on the interaction of policy supply factors and policy audience factors. Based on the data analysis of Industrial Policy Survey in Pudong New Area, this paper studies the influential factors of industrial policy effectiveness. The results show that when the actual perception of industrial policy effectiveness is higher than the expectation of it, industrial policy partly fails, while short-term effectiveness is more pronounced than long-term effectiveness; and when the actual benefits of long-term effectiveness is lower than expected returns, this unbalanced relationship will incentivize industry players to promote policy innovation. In the process of formulating industrial policy, the government has a greater influence on subjective preferences, and the degree of fit between industrial policy and corporate needs is low, which weakens the effectiveness of industrial policy; the stability of industrial policy and the diversity of promotion channels help to improve industrial policy effectiveness. Enterprises that make greater contributions to the development of local economies are more likely to gain industrial policy tilts and support, and those with higher levels of development feedback higher industrial policy effectiveness. Therefore, in order to further optimize regional industrial policy and improve the effectiveness, decision makers should pay more attention to the laws of market, making subdivision policy, combining the long-term and phased nature of policy, optimizing information distribution and management, and improving the implementation and evaluation of policy.

YAN Yuan,a greater thinker in the early Qing Dynasty, discovered his real parentage during the funeral of his adoptive grandmother. At the same time,he transferred his intellectual direction from admiring CHENG-ZHU to "returning to" Confucius-Mencius. From the perspective of psychohistory, the phenomenon that these two changes happened at the same time was not accidental at all. YAN always expected to be a sage but was greatly depressed by his adoptive grandfather. Meanwhile,he had unconsciously suspected the doctrine of ZHU Xi for a long time. The discovery of his real parentage offered him an opportunity to solve the identity crisis through finding his origin in the bloodline as well as in the intellectual lineage. In addition, YAN faced the problem of not having an heir all his life. These ethical problems caused the interplay of YAN's awareness of the bloodline and that of the intellectual lineage.

    Abstract189)   HTML7)    PDF (538KB)(533)
In recent decades, virtue ethics has been reviving in a flourishing manner in the English world, which challenges the dominance of deontology and utilitarianism and consequently helps to form a tripod-like situation of contemporary ethics. Scholars engaging in comparative study start to explore the resources of virtue ethics in their own philosophical traditions. Especially,a large number of works on Confucian virtue ethics have appeared in the last decade. Of course, there are also some objections arise. In his recent book The Good is One,Its Manifestations Many,Robert Neville suspects the "quite popular view" of "fruitfully regarding Confucianism as virtue ethics". He argues that virtue ethics contains some defects that Confucian ethics does not contain on the one hand and Confucian ethics has merits that virtue ethics lacks on the other. This paper argues that Confucian ethics is virtue ethics by demonstrating Confucian ethics have some features characterized by virtue ethics. Moreover, virtue ethics does not have the defects that Neville mentions, while it also has the merits that Neville attributes to Confucian ethics. Therefore,we can legitimately regard Confucian ethics as virtue ethics.

    Abstract132)   HTML6)    PDF (592KB)(678)
There is a debate on WANG Yang-ming's notion of liangzhi between YU Zhen-hua and HUANG Yong. YU believes that liangzhi is moral knowing-how while HUANG considers that it is moral knowing-to. HUANG criticizes that YU's misusing of the concept of disposition, which can be traced back to G. Ryle, has led to the wrong classification of liangzhi. To respond to HUANG's critiques,we must analyze the phenomenon of a person with moral knowing-to but no knowing-how. Then the examination on cases of a good hand of planting rice and a filial son shows HUANG's misusing of the concept of fancier. The revelation of the dimension of judgment in the conflicting structure of knowing-to,namely the capacity to distinguish right from wrong and good from evil, shows that knowing-how is a not sufficient for moral knowing-how although it is necessary. Furthermore, this paper defines moral knowing-how in terms of exclusiveness.

Numerology (shushu)is an important and particular part of Chinese traditional culture. As a cognitive phenomenon, the origin and continuation of numerology is natural. According to the cognitive mechanism of numerology,it believes in a naive dualism of mind-body based on intellectual perception on the one hand, and a hypersensitive and active detection device with evolved advantages. At the cultural level, the fusion of cognition and evaluation, the unity of cognition and action, and the correlative thinking are three main features of numerology. Accordingly, numerology pursues practical effectivity rather than truth.

Human intelligence is essentially embodied, but also heavily relies on our computational and representational brain. The difficulties artificial intelligence face nowadays, are not resulted from its framework of computation-representation,but rather, the absence of bodily information in the description of intelligence program. Therefore, the tacit representations which bear enormous knowing-how are extremely meaningful to the future research of artificial intelligence,in terms of extending the routine of problem-solving and reducing the complexity of computation.

In 2016,The Law of People's Republic of China on Traditional Chinese Medicine stipulates that traditional Chinese medicine includes the medicine of ethnic groups. The practice of "including Mongolian medicine in traditional Chinese medicine" is confirmed by law, which is not only in accordance with the national standard but also beneficial to national interest. From the national perspective, "including Mongolian medicine in traditional Chinese medicine" is also an effort to construct the spiritual home of all ethnic groups in China. In addition,it shows that the elites attempt to realize culture identity through category identity. "Including Mongolian medicine in traditional Chinese medicine" enlarges the scope of traditional Chinese medicine, increases the inclusion of Chinese culture, embraces all groups of people in China in order to put their subjectivity into a full play and to seek overlapping consensus among differences.

In anthropology, women, just like non-Western societies, have been constructed as the other in the male-centered Western society and modernity in space and time, which has given feminism, together with post-colonialism and others,a reasonable ground to take part in the self-reflection of anthropology on its concepts, theories and writing approaches in the past several decades. At the same time, the decentralized and de-familiarized attitude and ethnographical writing of anthropology also have provided feminism with an opportunity to move from cultural criticism to field practice. This paper takes the research of time in the anthropology as a case to present the inter-construction between feminism and anthropology.

    Abstract133)   HTML3)    PDF (726KB)(411)
The care about body is the starting point of the research of medical anthropology, whereas cultural anthropology often cares about how "natural" body becomes the metaphor of social structure. By studying a great amount of ethnographical records and analyzing people's narrative of illness after the malfunction of modern medical science and traditional rites of expelling demons based on five-month field research, this paper reveals the social context of Wa villagers' illness narrative beyond the modern medical system and their continuous sense of body fragility. Along with the construction of public sanitation facilities, the long-last view of miasma causing diseases has been gradually denied, but the narrative of illness beyond the modern medical system still exists. This kind of illness narrative of individuals shows that the disordered body is transformed to continuous experience of body fragility, which implies an "embodied" nation, revealing how national power penetrates into local society and is internalized in individuals.

Through investigating the traditional pig-raising in Enshi Prefecture in Hubei province, this paper examines the relationship between villagers' daily activities and their ontological security. Like many other rural areas in China, villages in southwest Hubei have undergone rapid social changes in the past decades, represented by depopulation and social fragmentation. Villagers staying in rural areas have used traditional pig farming to deal with these changes, which helps them to set up relative stability in changes. The study shows that traditional pig-raising,especially the ethnobotanical knowledge associated with plants collected for pigs, brings villagers a strong feeling of temporal and spatial order,as well as continuity, reliability and control, which is essential to ontological security. It helps villagers to maintain a state of "independence without isolation",which is conducive to the continuity of rural communities.

During the Third Taiwan Strait Crisis in the end of 1962,a large-scale emergent war preparation was initiated by the People's Liberation Army in coastal regions in Southeast China in order to defend Kuomintang's attack of the mainland. In order to offer full support to this war preparation,Guangdong Province also mobilized a large-scale Assist-the-Front movement. It contributed greatly to the final success of this war preparation, which led to a peaceful end of this crisis. Guangdong Provincial Government also learnt important experiences for domestic mobilization from this movement that explained its outstanding performance in the Third Front Construction two years later.

Although Burma declared that it would implement neutral diplomacy in 1948-1950,U Nu administration hoped to form an alliance with Western countries. After the Korean War broke out,U Nu administration quickly realized that joining the Western Bloc would cause damage to Burma's national security and consequently tried to pursue neutral diplomacy between Eastern Bloc and Western Bloc at the United Nations. Similarly, because of the Korean War, Truman administration decided to support KMT remnantsclandestinely. This kind of behavior that infringed Burma's sovereignty enabled U Nu administration to stop receiving U.S. economic assistance in March 1953 while expand bilateral economic and trade cooperation with China. In a word, the Korean War played a very important role in shaping Burma's neutral diplomacy. This case study shows the cross-regional impacts of major Cold War events. Or more specifically, transformation in the relationship between East and West occurred in one region caused the changes of some country's international environment in another region or even its foreign strategy.

In September 1991, DPRK and ROK were simultaneously admitted to the United Nations since DPRK had changed its long-standing policy. China's "persuasion" played an important role in North Korea's joining the United Nations. North Korea was forced to reluctantly reverse its position on UN membership due to China's unwillingness to veto South Korea's unilateral application. The reason why North Korea was "persuaded" by China is that it hoped that its compromise on the issue of joining UN could be exchanged for the delay of China's establishing diplomatic relations with South Korea. It was a result of the interaction between China and DPRK under a special premise in a special period.

Since the Tang Dynasty,Confucian Temples had become "public sacrificial temples" and prefecture or county schools had been affiliated to Confucian Temples. Records of these schools were entitled as either the "stele of the temple",the "record of the temple",the "record of the school" or the "record of the school in the temple",all of which can be categorized as "records of schools". By examining the historical contexts of "reviving schools" in the Northern Song Dynasty and studying the "records of schools" collected in the Complete Works in the Song Dynasty, this paper reveals a process of shifting the focus from the "temple" toward the "school" in the "records",which was the actual formative process of "records of schools" as a prose genre in the Song Dynasty. During this transformation,WANG An-shi had the intention to criticize and abandon the former conventions theoretically in his "Record of Fanchang County School".

After ZHANG Ju-zheng's death,Emperor Wanli (whose name is ZHU Yi-jun)began to take the throne and he worked hard to rule the state at the beginning. At that time, the great ceremonial officer SHEN Li made vigorous efforts to restore traditional rites, eliminate luxurious customs and encourage frugality. However, only 4 years later, with the issue of designating the crown prince,SHEN was resigned and the Emperor became delinquent in political affairs. In his "Ceremonial Officer's Memorial to the Throne",SHEN stated the "decline of traditional teachings and rites" in a miserable manner, which reflected the common attitudes of official scholars during the reign of Emperor Wanli. SHEN attempted to vigorously restore traditional rites but became unfavorable later, in which the change of the monarch-subject relationship between SHEN and Emperor ZHU reflected the complex state of Emperor Wanli's reign. The great change of ritual and music in the late Ming Dynasty, that is,the flourishing of court folk music and the dramatic poetry, can date back to SHEN's experience.

    Abstract134)   HTML4)    PDF (888KB)(527)
The establishment of the image "kasumi" at the beginning of spring embodies the cultural conflict and integration between Japan and China. Literally, the meaning of "kasumi" in Waka poems as "xia" in Chinese, that is,red clouds, was influenced by the popular expression of "yanxia" (smoky red clouds)from Chinese poetry. In terms of seasonal sense, "kasumi" was directly originated from the traditional Japanese natural calendar,in which the word "haru" is used to stand for "spring". Therefore, "kasumi" has a distinct hue of regional feature. The combination of the beginning of spring and "kasumi" was originally created by the court poet Kakinomoto Hitomaro to moderate the conflict between old and new seasonal senses in Jitō's reign, during which the Chinese Lunisolar calendar was released officially. The emerge of this image marks the beginning of seasonal chant in Waka poems. Also, embedding the Japanese pronunciation of the beginning of spring into Waka had an important effect on the formation of the seasonal sense in ancient Waka, in which the four seasons were so distinctive.

Using samples of overseas M&A (mergers and acquisitions)made by Chinese listed companies between 2009-2017,this paper examines how political connection and nature of equity affect the willingness and scale of cross-border M&A. It shows that enterprise's political connection and nature of equity don't influence the willingness of cross-border M&A alongside the Belt and Road, but affect the size of the acquisition. Companies with political connection merger bigger than companies without. The width and depth of political connection are positively correlated with the size of the acquisition. Chinese companies should concentrate on the economical profit on the one hand and try to achieve a win-win situation in the construction of "One Belt and One Road" on the other.

    Abstract159)   HTML4)    PDF (1526KB)(414)

With the prevalent trend of technological innovation in China,it is no surprise to see the technology industry becoming the fastest growing sector in China's M&A market. The market characteristics and development quality will vitally influence its long-term prospects. The evidence has shown that:(1)VC/PE are becoming major players in this invigorated market, not only as the main seller but also as the main buyer. VC/PE have contributed vastly to the technological development in China;(2)due to the fact that strategic investors are more prone to foreign technology projects or even non-technology projects, most domestic cases of M&A were conducted between domestic financial investors, which means that the shareholding structure of the target companies have not shifted from short-term investors to long-term ones, therefore the financial investors have not finally exited their invested projects successfully by means of the M&A transactions;(3)the major difference between the investment strategies of the above two types of investors indicates two warning signs, the first being the possibility of opportunism and thus bubbles in technology investments in China, and the second being the difficulty in final exiting the domestic technology projects owned by VC/PE. These potential problems will have an impact on whether technological investments in China continues to develop strongly and consistently and therefore should draw attention from investors and policy makers.

This paper investigates how and what determinates privately-owned listed companies' response to their overseas M&A. We find that the overseas M&A of privately-owned companies haven't created short-term market value for shareholders in general, and their short-term market value is significantly lower than that of state-owned companies. Further, the examination for the determinants of short-term market value indicates that it is negatively related with the acquirer's size and free cash flow, and it is also negatively related with the variables of target in sensitivity industry and same industry. The results not only provide a new evidence for whether the overseas M&A of privately-owned enterprises create or destroy value, but also provide insights for government monitoring the overseas M&A of privately-owned companies in China, that is,Chinese government should be carefully identify, investigate and monitor the overseas M&A of China's privately-owned companies.

The daily effect of the announcement of major asset mergers and reorganizations of cash payment can only last 4 trading days after the announcement, while that of equity and asset payment or hybrid payment can last 6 trading days;(3)as for the cumulative abnormal returns (CAR)on the 15 trading days after the announcement, the CAR of hybrid payment is 0.242,which is much higher than that of equity and asset payment as 0.216 and that of cash payment as 0.108;(4)the CAR of hybrid payment of privately-owned companies is much higher and more obvious that that of state-owned enterprises.

In China's capital market, the dispute over the role of independent directors, especially the accounting profession independent directors,in improving the quality of accounting information of listed companies has been going on and on. In addition, the proportion of accounting profession independent directors with accounting firm background has been rising since 2013. Therefore,it is necessary to study the influence of accounting profession independent directors with accounting firm background on the accounting information transparency on the one hand, and the moderating effect of internal control environment on such influence on the other. The empirical results based on the data of Shenzhen A-share listed companies from 2010 to 2016 show that accounting profession independent directors with accounting firm background have reduced the accounting information transparency, and those who hold current positions of the accounting firm during the accounting period have more obvious role in reducing the accounting information transparency. In addition, the role will be significantly weakened in companies with better internal controls, and it will be enhanced in companies with less internal controls.

Mainly using the doctrine of "metabolism" to study the social transformation in modern China, CHEN Xu-lu has perfectly combined overall observations of grand historical trends on the one hand and careful analyses of historical details on the other. The fields he proposed, including the studies of Shanghai culture, Shanghai history, medium-level societies, secret parties and the history of China's society, still have great impact on the academic circle in China. Having historical insightfulness, historical talents and historical virtues, CHEN has set an example for and become a model in the research of modern Chinese history. Besides the theories that can be applied as methods, CHEN also has his "formless methodology", i.e., the ability of theoretical thinking. In order to promote the quality of the research of modern Chinese history in today's China, we need to re-visit and re-examine the historical legacy of CHEN.

The strength and profoundness of theoretical thinking, which this modern Chinese historian has won in the spiritual purgatory, pervades in the work. This will be more and more splended as time goes by.

    Abstract153)   HTML6)    PDF (486KB)(476)
The interaction between Chinese and Western philosophy has experienced a historical transformation. When missionaries came to China in the late Ming Dynasty and early Qing Dynasty, Chinese and Western philosophy, as well as their cultures, began to encounter with each other. There was a kind of imbalance or asymmetry between Chinese and Western philosophy in the following way:representative European thinkers and European academic circle as a whole showed great interest in Chinese classics, cultural values and ideas when they were introduced into Europe by missionaries, whereas Chinese philosophers only paid attention to Western science and technology instead of Western mainstream culture and thought. However, there appeared another kind of imbalance or asymmetry in modern times. Since the late 19th century, Chinese thinkers have been eager to learn Western thought and taken advantage of it as a universal intellectual resource, whereas Western mainstream thinkers and philosophers haven't treated Chinese philosophy as real philosophy. They have never understood Chinese philosophy at a deep level, let alone using it to construct their own systems. To enter into the world, Chinese philosophy shall firstly prove its universal significance. Chinese philosophy shall demonstrate its unique value in terms of solving philosophical problems on the one hand and creatively constructing contemporary Chinese philosophy on the other. Only based on mutual acceptance and appreciation can sound interaction between Chinese and Western philosophy become possible after going beyond the two kinds of asymmetry in the history.

Three predecessors in ethics put forward different opinions to this question. ZHOU Yuan-bing insists that ethics is "moral science". However, ZHOU Fu-cheng and FENG Qi hesitated to accept this opinion, respectively putting forward their unique understandings on the relationship between ethics and philosophy, the construct of ethics with Chinese characteristics and other important issues. An examination of their disputation will bring inspiration for us to "rewrite Chinese ethics" today.

In his critique of Western liberalist notion of self, Henry Rosemont takes a deliberate one-sided approach, one that uses language performatively in a given particular spatiotemporal context. This method of doing philosophy is common among those who take philosophy as a way of life. French philosopher Sartre, for instance, has displayed a one-sidedness in his view about self in an opposite direction from Rosemont's. Their practices suggest a gongfu perspective, with which we evaluate philosophical ideas according to their functions in shaping human behaviors with consideration of the context of their uses.

    Abstract212)   HTML6)    PDF (673KB)(474)
Drawing on contemporary language and rhetorical theory, this paper provides a critique of American President Donald Trump's language behavior. On the basis of this critique, this paper challenges traditional perspectives on language function and advances a new perspective called the language of presence-and-absence. This paper aims to illustrate four points:1. Trump's ability to construct an alternative reality by ingeniously using rhetorical tropes, understanding his audience, and adopting their language has directly contributed to his unexpected victory in the 2016 presidential election over his Democratic opponent and former Secretary of State Hilary Clinton. 2. The language of presence and the language of absence, two of the traditional perspectives on language function, can no longer constitute a satisfactory answer to the "Trump Phenomenon." 3. The language of presence-and-absence can help free us from the constraints of traditional perspectives on language function. 4. To accurately deconstruct the "Trump Phenomenon," it is essential to develop a new understanding of rhetoric's generative and transformative capability. Only by securing this kind of understanding can we begin to engage American contemporary political rhetoric more critically and to develop new concepts that can transcend such binaries as facts versus fiction, appearance versus essence, and probability versus certainty.

This paper reports the findings of a study on the acceptability of English translations of 20 popular Chinese neologisms through questionnaires and in-depth interviews with native speakers of English. The study tries to find out the elements that influence such acceptability in terms of translation strategies and methods and others. An analysis of the survey results reveals that when translating Chinese neologisms, context greatly influences the acceptability of translation strategy:for words exhibiting a large cultural vacancy, a conservation translation strategy such as literal translation method or transliteration method with annotation method works better, while for words exhibiting a smaller cultural vacancy, priority should be given to such substitution translation strategies as free translation method and naturalization method. Furthermore, great attention should be paid to the cognition, thinking patterns, the culture tradition of the potential readers and the communication purpose, which entail flexible use of translation methods.

    Abstract219)   HTML15)    PDF (4372KB)(580)
When introducing China's thoughts, concepts and situations, it is unavoidable to involve the translation of many Chinese culture-loaded words. If the translation is inaccurate, it will lead to misunderstanding, even produce the opposite effect, and bring negative impact on China's national image. By investigating a large number of cross-cultural translation cases, the study concludes that some new concepts should be established in translating cultural-loaded words:1. The translation should be judged from the perspective of foreigners(native speakers of the target language). 2. The meaning of a foreign word should not be understood only from the dictionaries, but also from their actual use; 3. "No translation" does not mean "no interpretation", "zero translation" is not equal to "zero interpretation"; transliteration is only the first step. Interpreting the new words in foreign languages is more important second step. 4. Online dictionaries should follow the "lower limit principle" and try to incorporate any new words translated from Chinese. 5. The economic laws should be considered in translation; foreigners tend to use more concise transliteration and abandon the complicated free translation. 6. Transliteration of Chinese culture-loaded words can be based on Chinese Pinyin system, but it should be fine-tuned according to the actual situation.

The Chinese economy, including the real estate industry, has achieved sustained and rapid development in the past 40 years of the practice of reform and opening up. Through the analysis of China's real estate industry's input, output and social impact, as well as with an international comparison, we can conclude that the development of China's real estate industry is a miracle. This miracle has been realized through four stages, including the recovery of real estate industry, its rapid development, accelerated development and sustainable development, under the impetus of commodification, marketization, capitalization and financialization. The rapid development of Chinese real estate industry is driven by the tremendous development opportunities brought about by urbanization, housing system innovation by the central and local governments, continuous invest of labor and capital factors, pull power of housing demand and support from related industries. At present, China's real estate industry is at a critical stage of transformation. It is necessary to optimize the input of integrated factors with institutional innovation and technological innovation, to evolve toward the development direction of the real estate service industry, and to accelerate the transformation of the industrial development model so as to promote effectively the sustainable and healthy development of the real estate industry.

Based on the supply and demand model, this paper qualitatively analyzes the impact of interest rates, purchase restrictions and their linkages on housing prices and finds out that the results are unclear. Using the annual panel data of 69 large and medium-sized cities from 2007 to 2014, the empirical research shows that at the national level, the change of interest rates is negatively correlated with house prices, while the purchase restriction policies increase house prices but it become effective by raising interest rates. After further classification of cities according to economic development and urbanization level, it is found that the impact of policies on the real estate market is significantly heterogeneous. Therefore, the real estate control policy should consider the mixed effect of interest rates and purchase restriction policies. The whole country can adopt the interest rates to control the house prices directly, while the purchase restriction policies need to be accompanied by other measures. In the case of a single city, double-high cities are more likely to adopt purchase restriction policies to restrain housing prices, while other cities can use interest rates and purchase restriction policies to jointly control housing prices.

Journal of East China Normal University (Philosoph    2018, 50 (6): 100-107.   DOI: 10.16382/j.cnki.1000-5579.2018.06.012
    Abstract192)   HTML11)    PDF (640KB)(721)

With the gradual adjustment of the family planning policy, the number of families with two or more children in China's urban areas has increased. Existing studies rarely analyze the impact of the number and gender of children on family housing choices. Based on the urban data of Chinese Family Panel Survey in 2014, this paper analyzes the influence of the number and gender of children on the choice of family housing with OLS and Probit multiple regression model. Under the conditions of controlling individual, family characteristics and regional factors, this empirical research shows that in contrast to the families without children, those with children have larger housing area, lower per capita housing area, and they are more likely to own living housing and also more likely to own multiple housing. Families with more children have larger housing area, lower per capita housing area, and lower housing quality, and they are more likely to own living housing. Families with sons have larger housing sizes and they are more likely to own multiple homes than those without sons. Finally, the corresponding policy is suggested to adjust the amount and structure of supply to meet the demand of families with multiple children, to improve the quality of housing and to satisfy their pursuit of better life in the supply reform of housing industry.

    Abstract152)   HTML9)    PDF (1042KB)(439)
Beyond the research scope of sociology and management science, the cultivation and development of social organizations has become an important perspective to observe the political trend in today's China. It is definitively significant to review it from the aspect of politics and map the remarkable directions and variables of it. There are four analytical frameworks available now:social centralism, state centralism, market centralism and co-governance theory. The first three, which are based on the structural analysis of "state-society-market", have been widely used, while recently co-governance has become the main research method, which emphasizes the process interaction of the subjects and the orientation of social autonomy. Actually, only by incorporating the issue of social organization into the overall process of China's political and social transformation can a relatively cautious conclusion be possible with a systematic and comprehensive analysis. It is significant to establish an analytical framework that fosters and balances the four elements of state, market, society and party, and identifies their roles, boundaries, effective linkages and interactive mechanism.

    Abstract92)   HTML6)    PDF (524KB)(296)
The attraction and innovation of the research of "project system" lies in the abundance and activeness of its narrative structure and its deep elaboration on daily life practices. The research of process analyses makes up the abstraction and singularity of pure theoretical research effectively. However, the over orientation of "governing the state with projects" leads to researchers' over use and stereotyped application of the phrase and the dogmatic usage eliminates its abundance and diversity. Therefore, in order to realize the researchers' great aspirations, we should make the comparison of multiple research patterns and make reflective critiques instead of ignore the research of relative fields.

    Abstract106)   HTML9)    PDF (716KB)(415)

With the improvement of people's economic conditions and living standard, the demand for public service is increasing. In order to meet people's growing demand for better public services, the state has vigorously promoted the cooperation between government and social capital(PPP) since 2014 to better realize public services. The PPP model can not only promote the quality of public services, but also take a special role in relieving the financial pressure of local governments and promoting the transformation and upgrading of state-owned enterprise. To achieve a valid and sound cooperation between state-owned enterprise and social capital, we shall positively establish credit and protection mechanism, cultivate professional talents and create more financing methods for social capital.

Journal of East China Normal University (Philosoph    2018, 50 (6): 133-143.   DOI: 10.16382/j.cnki.1000-5579.2018.06.016
    Abstract371)   HTML6)    PDF (974KB)(366)
The concept of endogenous development has been the focus of academic discussion since the beginning. Endogenous development especially emphasizes the development of person in the territory. To provide effective reference for rural development, we shall find out the relationship between endogenous development and the development of person. An analysis of relevant data obtained through an empirical survey in Shanghai suburbs shows that the "territorial identity" of suburban residents is significantly correlated with the level of regional endogenous development. In order to achieve endogenous development, it is necessary to elevate the sense of territorial identity of residents in urban suburbs, that is, to improve residents' local awareness, local identity and identity awareness. Then we shall give full play to the creativity of residents, so that their local willingness can play an important role in the construction of regional economic well-being through the multiple control mechanism in the process of development. In this way, we can achieve the benign state of social governance.

Journal of East China Normal University (Philosoph    2018, 50 (6): 144-152.   DOI: 10.16382/j.cnki.1000-5579.2018.06.017
    Abstract154)   HTML9)    PDF (2033KB)(588)
Innovating social governance and improving its scientific, precise and professional level is the common aspirations and pursuits of all sectors of society. Residents' satisfaction is the starting point and ending point of social governance innovation. From the perspective of social governance innovation, this paper systematically analyzes the social governance satisfaction of Chinese residents. It shows that the satisfaction needs to be improved, the adequacy and convenience of resources are the most important factors for residents, both the residential area and the residential community have a significant impact on residents' social governance satisfaction, and rural residents have the highest level of overall satisfaction. The government should push down the focus of social governance, raise the level of intelligence and specialization in social governance, pay attention to multi-sector cooperation, and increase the value of social governance services.

Journal of East China Normal University (Philosoph    2018, 50 (6): 153-162.   DOI: 10.16382/j.cnki.1000-5579.2018.06.018
    Abstract175)   HTML6)    PDF (773KB)(349)

In recent years, with the aging of the population, the life satisfaction of Chinese elderly people as well as their actual and preferred living arrangements have attracted extensive attention. Using 2011 and 2013 of China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study(CHARLS), this paper shows that the realization of preferred living arrangements has positive effects on the life satisfaction of the elderly, no matter whether they are willing to live with their children. In addition, the elderly's relative income compared with their children and their health status are main factors that result in the unmet preferred living arrangements. Thus, in order to meet the preferred living arrangement and elevate their life satisfaction, a completed pension system shall be established and the coverage of pension fund shall be enlarged. Besides, the system for medical services and health insurance shall be improved in accordance with the elderly's special requirements for medical services.

On Today's Perceptual Structure of Public Health Service Satisfaction of Residents
    FAN Jing-bo
Journal of East China Normal University (Philosoph    2018, 50 (6): 163-171.   DOI: 10.16382/j.cnki.1000-5579.2018.06.019
    Abstract143)   HTML5)    PDF (1314KB)(424)

In the transitional period in China, the reform of medical security and service has become one of significant areas that the government makes great efforts to push. The improvement of public services in health care is the key to that of residents' livelihood and happiness index. This study systematically analyzes residents' satisfaction of public health services in China, measures the level of satisfaction, and discusses the structure of satisfaction perception. It shows that the average score of residents' overall satisfaction of public health services in China is 65.99, which still has a large room for improvement. In the 11 types of public health service projects, the average scores of the three types of public services such as "health supervision and management", "drug safety management" and "basic drug system" are the lowest. Residents' perception structure can be divided into two constructs, that is, "disease prevention and management satisfaction" and "drug management and health supervision satisfaction", and the overall satisfaction of residents is more susceptible to the former.
