The Dimension of Human Science in the Construction of Contemporary Chinese Ethics: A Possible Way to “Rewrite Chinese Ethics”
    LI Jian-hua
Journal of East China Normal University (Philosoph    2019, 51 (1): 3-10.   DOI: 10.16382/j.cnki.1000-5579.2019.01.001
    Abstract248)   HTML8)    PDF (1229KB)(355)
The return to human science in reshaping or constructing contemporary Chinese ethics is essentially required by ethics or moral philosophy. The fact that ethics and human science are partially consistent in the content makes such return possible and consequently improve ethics. The dual dimensions of human beings as biological and social beings, and their individual differences make ethics necessary. At the same time, ethics always contains two kinds of ideal hypotheses, that is, the hypothesis of the sage and that of the perfect person. Both of them are the normative pursuit of ethics but difficult to achieve in real life. Then we meet a practical dilemma in ethics:the distance between the sacred and the secular, the alienated and the perfect restricts the development of individuals' moral ability, and thus make moral ideals "hang in mid-air". Therefore, it is a more sensible choice to realize the transformation of ethics from over-idealism to realism.

What Is “Doing Chinese Ethics” and Why Has Heidegger “Refused to Do Ethics”?
    DENG An-qing
Journal of East China Normal University (Philosoph    2019, 51 (1): 11-17.   DOI: 10.16382/j.cnki.1000-5579.2019.01.002
    Abstract271)   HTML13)    PDF (1142KB)(495)
What the slogan of "doing Chinese philosophy" concerns or resists is the "narrative of the history of philosophy" with "transmitting without innovation", which will lose universal philosophical thinking in historical knowledge narration. Therefore, it aims to overcome the historical and local knowledge narration to achieve true philosophy. It is for rather than against the universality of philosophy. It is only in this sense that "doing Chinese philosophy" is a legitimate appeal. Although ethics is a subordinate discipline in philosophy, ethical relations are regional and hence it is legitimate to "do Chinese ethics". However, if we "do philosophical ethics" instead of "descriptive ethics", we must reach pure thinking through questioning the ethicality of ethic relations and the morality of morals. We must find some absolute standards or bases, instead of simply taking any particular ethical relations and morals as standards or bases. Doing Chinese ethics, just as doing Chinese philosophy, has to face with some principled problems:How to justify being and where is the homeland of existence? However, in Western tradition, it is only pure speculative philosophy that serves as the first philosophy, and it is always ontology that lays the foundation of ethics. Ethics can never function as the first philosophy to justify being. In contrast, isn't "ethics as the first philosophy" implied in Chinese philosophy, which is based on ethics? If we can consciously demonstrate this at the level of the first philosophy, that is, the justice of being of a priori ethical relations, then we can not only justify the legitimacy of Chinese philosophy, as well as Chinese ethics, but also achieve the modern transformation of traditional Chinese philosophy. This would be a great cultural career in realizing the sinicization of Western philosophy on the one hand and the globalization of Chinese philosophy on the other.

The Dual Functions of Reason in Confucian Ethics of Unceasing Growth
    YANG Ze-bo
Journal of East China Normal University (Philosoph    2019, 51 (1): 18-23.   DOI: 10.16382/j.cnki.1000-5579.2019.01.003
    Abstract213)   HTML12)    PDF (1031KB)(310)
In the system of Confucian ethics of unceasing growth, reason undertakes the dual functions of inward cognition and outward cognition. The so-called outward cognition is the knowledge of external moral objects, while the so-called inward cognition is the re-recognition of inward consciousness. Both inward cognition and outward cognition are indispensable and interdependent. In the theory of Confucian ethics of unceasing growth, inward cognition embraces three different dimensions of desire, reason and humanness. The inward cognition of reason plays an important role in determining the authenticity of the inward rational consciousness, solving infinite regress, realizing the transition from the "being" of thinking to the "being" in actuality, and proving the spatio-temporality of reason. The inward cognition of reason is essential to the theoretical construction of Confucian ethics of unceasing growth.

“The New from the Old” in the May 4th New Cultural Movement
    XU Ji-lin
Journal of East China Normal University (Philosoph    2019, 51 (1): 24-36.   DOI: 10.16382/j.cnki.1000-5579.2019.01.004
    Abstract206)   HTML16)    PDF (2345KB)(502)
During the May 4th New Cultural Movement, three debates on new/Western and old/Chinese cultures were respectively carried out between the journal New Youth and LIN Qin-nan, CHEN Du-xiu and DU Ya-quan, as well as ZHANG Dong-sun and FU Si-nian. New Youth, CHEN Du-xiu and ZHANG Dong-sun were regarded as the "new school", whereas their opponents "the new school coming from the old school". The difference between them lies in their attitudes towards traditions instead of their new or old knowledge. After these three heated debates, New Youth gained a complete victory in port cities since young people there needed a radical project of cultural reform and simple attitude for action. However, the "young people from small towns" don't care about their attitude difference. They paid more attention to how to absorb "new knowledge" from them and kept more sympathetic to tradition.

A Critical Examination of YAO Ji-heng's A Comprehensive Study of the Spring and Autumn Annals from the Perspective of “Historical Aesthetics”
    LU Xin-sheng
Journal of East China Normal University (Philosoph    2019, 51 (1): 37-47.   DOI: 10.16382/j.cnki.1000-5579.2019.01.005
    Abstract173)   HTML9)    PDF (2402KB)(392)
YAO Ji-heng was a scholar who lived during the reign of Emperor Kangxi in the Qing Dynasty. A Comprehensive Study of the Spring and Autumn Annals represents his achievements in the research of The Spring and Autumn Annals and The Commentary of Zuo. Influenced by the trend of "criticizing and discarding Neo-Confucianism", A Comprehensive Study contains many defects, which unfortunately haven't been deeply examined in the academic circle. From the perspective of "historical Aesthetics", that is, examining history and historiography with the wisdom of Aesthetics, this paper analyzes A Comprehensive Study and finds out many defects in YAO's comments on Mencius's discussion about The Spring and Autumn Annals, his criticism of DU Yu's analyses of examples in The Commentary of Zuo and his criticism of The Commentary of Zuo. Such a critical examination of YAO would establish an example for today's academic research.

LÜ Si-mian and the Compilation of General History of China

Journal of East China Normal University (Philosoph    2019, 51 (1): 48-56.   DOI: 10.16382/j.cnki.10003-5579.2019.01.006
    Abstract216)   HTML12)    PDF (1747KB)(463)
Since the transformation of historical paradigm in the early 20th century, the fashion of historiography had tended to focus on the research of specialized histories. However, LÜ Si-mian claimed that the academic research should be shifted from extensiveness to specialization, and the research of histories of particular periods and general history were both important. During this period, the compilation of general history of China sought innovations and characteristics, therefore a variety of different styles of writings appeared. LÜ Si-mian focused on the study of social conditions and his books were characterized by comprehensiveness, closeness, plainness and strictness. As for researching and compiling methods, he could not only adopt modern scientific knowledge, but also follow and develop traditional methods, which leaded to his accomplishment of general history of China based on his profound scholarship.

Shall We Rectify the Names?: On the Relationship between LÜ Si-mian's Introduction to Chinese Medical Classics and XIE Guan's The Theory of Chinese Medicine
    WANG Ke
Journal of East China Normal University (Philosoph    2019, 51 (1): 57-64.   DOI: 10.16382/j.cnki.1000-5579.2019.01.007
    Abstract165)   HTML8)    PDF (2505KB)(443)
The Theory of Chinese Medicine is a well-known classic work of medical history, which has been considered to be the work of XIE Guan, a famous Chinese medicine scholar in modern times. In recent years, a series of books of great historian LÜ Si-mian and related new historical materials have been published, including a work entitled Introduction to Chinese Medical Classics. It is similar to The Theory of Chinese Medicine in terms of the overall structure and contents of the text. Through careful study and examination, we can find that The Theory of Chinese Medicine is a supplement to Introduction to Chinese Medical Classics. According to the principle of respecting historical facts, it is necessary to claim that The Theory of Chinese Medicine was written by LÜ Si-mian and revised and enlarged by XIE Guan.

“High Wenli”: Protestant Missionaries in the Late Qing Dynasty and “Writing in Classical Chinese” as well as “Classical Chinese”
    DUAN Huai-qing
Journal of East China Normal University (Philosoph    2019, 51 (1): 65-73.   DOI: 10.16382/j.cnki.1000-5579.2019.01.008
    Abstract210)   HTML10)    PDF (1624KB)(575)
The relationship between the Protestant missionaries in China and Chinese language in the late Qing Dynasty is reflected both in the translation of the Bible and the "Eastward Spread of Western Culture". With the deepening and popularization of "Eastward Spread of Western Culture" and the opening up of the interior northern China, the missionaries' views on Chinese language and their translation practices experienced a profound and continuous internal differentiation, forming two opposite groups in terms of "classical Chinese vs. vernacular Chinese". The disagreement and the controversy between them ended up with the victory of the latter when the "union version" Bible in Mandarin was issued in 1919. To a certain extent, this controversy about local language also reflects the perplexity about the relationship between classical Chinese language/culture and modern Chinese/culture in missionaries.

“A Sealed Book”: An Examination of the Spread and Use of the Delegates' Version Bible in the Late 19th Century
    LIU Yun
Journal of East China Normal University (Philosoph    2019, 51 (1): 74-81.   DOI: 10.16382/j.cnki.1000-5579.2019.01.009
    Abstract215)   HTML8)    PDF (1605KB)(427)
In the translation history of the Bible into Chinese in the 19th century, the Delegates' Version has an epoch-making significance:the "elegant and standard classical Chinese" used by W. H. Medhurst and WANG Tao brought a high reputation to the version; on the other hand, the unfathomable classical Chinese employed also made it impossible for the Delegates' Version to be effectively spread among the masses, and it was even called "a sealed book" by many missionaries. Based on the archives of the British Bible Society, this paper focuses on controversies about the Delegates' Version from the 1860s to the 1880s, analyzes historical facts and explores the influence of the "standard classical Chinese" applied by the Delegates' Version on its spread and reading in the mid-to-late 19th Century. This paper also examines how the above concerns changed the translating strategies of the Bible into Chinese, and explores the use of written languages and the concern about multiple languages in early modern China.

With the consciousness of Chinese cultural identity, LIN Yu-tang integrated the advantages of Chinese and Western cultures, reexamined Chinese language, literature and culture and attempted to recreate them when he studied in St. John's University. Although LIN's views on Chinese language and literature were seemingly "contradictory" at that time, he was making great efforts to find an ideal balance between Western experiences and national culture, and between cosmopolitanism and nationalism. This practice was not only the result of the policy of "integrating Chinese and Western cultures" in St. John University under the leadership of President Rev. Francis Lister Hawks Pott, but also an important part of campus culture. More importantly, it was an internal source of LIN's language and literature practices in and after the May 4th period.

ZHANG Nian launched a feminist critique on Hegel in her recent work. The essence of ZHANG's critique is to let Hegel oppose himself, that is, Hegel of master-slave dialectic against Hegel as a "philosopher of love". Badiou opened up another post-Hegelian path towards emancipation:he formally revived Hegel's praise of love, while substantially revised Hegel's dialectic. It is precisely compared wth ZHANG's feminist critique on love that Badiou's path shows its strength and value in the history of philosophy.

Two Concepts of Citizen in the History of Western Thought
    TANG Yu, GAO Li-ke
Journal of East China Normal University (Philosoph    2019, 51 (1): 100-108.   DOI: 10.16382/j.cnki.1000-5579.2019.01.012
    Abstract198)   HTML13)    PDF (1597KB)(364)
In the history of Western thought, the concept of citizen has two different traditions, that is, republicanism and literalism. A citizen in terms of republicanism is a member of political community sharing public power and a patriot who pursues a virtuous life, whereas a citizen in terms of literalism is a citizen who pursues personal wealth and enjoys freedom and rights on the one hand and a member of community that has the right to vote on the other. These two concepts are the results of the city-state system and literal society respectively and the contrast between them represents the conflict between publicity and privateness. The Western intellectual history has witnessed profound changes of the concept of citizen. In the unitary-mode civil society from Plato to Rousseau, a citizen means a political citizen who takes public responsibilities and enjoys political freedom. In Locke's dual-mode, where the civil society and the state are separate, a citizen is the one who has property, pursues wealth and enjoys personal rights. In Tocqueville's trinity-mode with market, state and community, a citizen is the combination of positive and negative aspects. With the ideal of publican freedom, Tocqueville tries to overcome the disadvantage of less participation in parliamentarianism with civil community. Bringing together the two civil legacies of literalism and republicanism, Tocqueville seeks to revive the civil ideal of republicanism in the community life in modern society of freedom and democracy.

Machiavelli defines the model of government in ancient Rome, both in its regal and republic periods, as "vivere civile". For what is "vivere civile", the republican interpretation of Skinner, a scholar of Cambridge School, occupies a dominant position in the academic circle. He holds that it is a political life independent of the external power, in which citizens conduct self-governance and actively participate in political life. In fact, the fundamental feature of the concept of "vivere civile" is the rule of law instead of the active participation of its citizens. Machiavelli's concept of "vivere civile", derived from "civilitas", the language of Roman law tradition and against the tyranny, is a form of political community governed by laws and institutions. It can be presented in either a kingdom form or a republican form in spite of the fact that Machiavelli himself has a greater attachment to the latter.

As for the sinicization of foreign religions, the academic circle has summarized and studied the positive experience of the four existing religions:Buddhism, Islam, Catholicism and Protestantism. From a new perspective, this paper studies the three foreign religions disappeared during the mediaeval times, that is, Zoroastrianism, Manichaeism and Nestorianism. By analyzing why they failed to spread in China and comparing the practices of Buddhism and Taoism, this paper also illustrates that it is necessary to adhere to two basic principles of "maintaining the country's stability and improving people's welfare" in the sinicization of foreign religions. Otherwise, foreign religions cannot exist in China for long.

Characteristics of Nagarjuna's Sutra Hermeneutics: From the Perspective of His “Middle Way”

Nagarjuna's writings are representative works of Mahayana Buddhism. Combining the Mahayana classics prevailing at that time with the mainstream Indian traditions and putting forward categories such as "middle way", "eight negation", "two truths", he not only dated back to Shakyamuni in the tradition of Buddhism, but also reconstructed it. His arguing method extracted from classic texts is very unique. The content and logic of the argument is established or vanished timely. Differing from modern hermeneutics which explores the possibilities of life, Nagarjuna's Middle Way is characterized by "neither dying nor being born", standing aloof from this world.

    Abstract224)   HTML12)    PDF (1654KB)(550)
In the Records of Laws and Regulations in the Tang Dynasty, there are two versions of records about founding Kaiyuan Official Temples issued by Emperor Xuan-zong on June 1, the 26th year of Kaiyuan. In its Volume 48, it is said that "the Cloud Temples in the two capitals and other prefectures are renamed Kaiyuan Official Temples". This is neither a fact nor the content of Emperor Xuan-zong's edict. Emperor Xuan-zong's edict that "local Buddhist and Taoist temples in favorable geographical locations in or near administrative centers shall be renamed Kaiyuan State Monasteries" in Volume 50 had been implemented effectively in each prefecture, which can be demonstrated by the fact that Kaiyuan Official Temples in each prefecture all meet these two requirements. In fact, Emperor Xuan-zong's edict was to inherit the tradition of establishing both Daoist and Buddhist temples and maintain the role of Daoism as the state religion in the Tang Dynasty.

Can Land Marketization Narrow the Urban-Rural Income Gap?: Empirical Evidence from 232 Prefecture-Level Cities in China

Journal of East China Normal University (Philosoph    2019, 51 (1): 140-149.   DOI: 10.16382/j.cnki.1000-5579.2019.01.017
    Abstract186)   HTML9)    PDF (1827KB)(542)

Land market reform is an important institutional variable which affects the urban-rural income gap. Using the data of 232 prefecture-level cities from 2001 to 2013, this paper empirically analyzes the impact of land marketization on the urban-rural income gap in China. It is found that land marketization significantly expands the urban-rural income gap at the national level, but there are regional differences in this impact. Land marketization in eastern China has narrowed the urban-rural income gap, while land marketization in central and western China has widened the urban-rural income gap. Therefore, from the perspective of the whole country, the land expropriation compensation mechanism shall shift from static monetary compensation to dynamic compensation, and reflect regional differences. In particular, the integration level of urban and rural land market in central and western regions should be improved. We shall also break away from the dual structure of unequal rights and interests in agricultural land and urban land, open up the urban and rural real estate market, establish a unified urban and rural land system and housing market, and promote equal rights and prices for same land. We shall properly handle with the relationship between the government and the market, reduce the government's improper interference in the allocation of land resources, balance the supply of land between regions, and encourage urban and rural residents in eastern, central and western regions to share the fruits of reform and development.

The Intergenerational Difference of Migrant Workers' Housing Difficulties in Inflowing Areas: Based on the Data of “Chinese Social Survey”

    Abstract143)   HTML13)    PDF (1599KB)(294)

Based on the data of "Chinese Social Survey", this paper studies the intergenerational difference of migrant workers' housing difficulties and their influencing factors. The results show that the intergenerational difference is obvious. Through the analysis of the function mechanism of the intergenerational difference, it turns out that the intergenerational variables not only have a direct impact but also have an indirect influence on their housing difficulties. The factors of marital status, employment status, unit nature and area types have significantly different influence on two generations of the migrant workers' housing difficulties. Household income in the previous year not only has a significant negative influence on the housing difficulties of the old generation of migrant workers, but also has a significant negative influence on the housing difficulties of the new generation of migrant workers. Whether the new generation of migrant workers or the old generation of migrant workers, the probability of housing difficulties of migrant workers who rent low-rent houses and private rental houses is lower than that of migrant workers who rent dormitories. Therefore, the government shall take specific measures to ease the housing difficulties of different generations of migrant workers. To reduce the probability of their housing difficulties, we shall improve their income, increase the supply of rental housing appropriate to their affordability, supply common-property affordable housing for the married new generation, encourage and support employers to renovate dormitories or build high quality blue-collar workers apartments.

The Effect of Fertility to the Career Interruption of Urban Women under the Background of “Universal Two-Child Policy”

Journal of East China Normal University (Philosoph    2019, 51 (1): 159-168.   DOI: 10.16382/j.cnki.1000-5579.2019.01.019
    Abstract207)   HTML12)    PDF (1656KB)(537)

With the implementation of the "Universal Two-Child Policy", urban women's reproductive habits and fertility behaviors have gradually changed, facing the dilemma of career interruption due to childbirth and second childbirth. Focusing on childbearing and career interruption has become an important part of women's employment at current stage. Based on the yearbook and survey data, this paper uses the Fixed-Effect Model to measure the influencing factors of urban women's career interruption, and the Probit Model to analyze the influence of fertility on career interruption and its mechanism. The results show that women with stronger fertility and supportive desires are more likely to experience career interruption. The older childbearing age, as well as the longer birth interval, is more conducive to women's employment; family care, employment support and parental leave are positively affecting women's re-employment; maternity insurance, maternity benefits and childcare services have positive effects on avoiding career interruption; labor contracts, employment guidance and employment subsidies are important guarantees for women's employment; and gender discrimination can aggravate career interruption. We should improve the supporting policy for two-child families, establish a work-family balance mechanism within the family, strive to increase the stock of women's human capital, create an employment environment with high resilience, and establish a sound system of fertility and employment security.

By examining (these) two doctrines of the relationship between Confucianism and liberty and re-interpreting Confucian humanity (ren) from the perspective of "emotion-responsibility", this paper reveals that Confucian humanity and liberal rights are independent values and they cannot be replaced by each other. Both for Confucianism and our society, it is a desirable intellectual career to further elaborate on the spirit of humanity not only at present but also in the future.

The Idea of “Ziyou” in Tang Poetry from the Perspective of the History of Philosophy in a Broad Sense

    Abstract208)   HTML10)    PDF (2138KB)(440)
The term "ziyou" (freedom) appeared as early as the Eastern Han Dynasty in ZHENG Xuan's Commentary on the Book of Rites. It was repeatedly used in the historical records such as the Book of the Eastern Han Dynasty. In these books, it mainly means a negative value referring to an individual's willful behavior that disobeys social system or order. However, it is quite positive in Tang poetry in the following five aspects:1. Resisting the constraint or the lack of liberty in politics or in official circles; 2. Complaining the lack of freedom in personal life and feelings; 3. The free will related to self-independence; 4. The free will related to the ultimate religious freedom; 5. The feeling of pleasure when one enjoys freedom. The former three express the longing for freedom when it is absent, while the latter two positively express and confirm the value of "ziyou". YAN Fu was correct when he claimed that "ziyou" was a value about which Chinese sages were apprehensive, not to mention basing their teachings on it. However, in Tang poetry, we can see that "ziyou" has become a positive value that some poets pursued. It is our duty to study traditional culture so as to elaborate and highlight the cultural heritage that is conducive to promoting contemporary values.

    Abstract267)   HTML6)    PDF (2132KB)(442)
It is by "metaphors" that a humanistic text grasps the world. There are three kinds of metaphors respectively corresponding to the genres of history, literature and philosophy in Chinese humanities:metonymy, synecdoche and irony. The historic genre creates historical "facts" and "narratives" in the way of metonymy to summarize the general principles going through the ancient and the present. Metonymy is based on the "sameness of structures" of myriads of things in the world. The narrative styles of history include "from events to principles" and "from principles to events". To realize the "interaction between Heaven and human", the literary genre is comprised of images, whose essence is "synecdoche". Synecdoche is based on the "sameness of essence" of the myriads of things. The literary genre in humanities has two styles, i.e., "from emotions to principles" and "from principles to emotions". The philosophical genre expresses its ultimate concern of "human nature and the Dao of Heaven" in a "paradoxical" way, which can be called "irony". Irony is based on the "sameness of existence" of the myriads of things. The two styles of philosophical genre in humanities are "from principles to the Dao" and "from the Dao to principles".

    Abstract319)   HTML8)    PDF (647KB)(380)
This paper discusses a number of difficult problems in the study of Chinese grammar from a more general perspective of grammatical morphology. The distinctive features between nouns and verbs in Chinese are demonstrated and thus the theory of "super-noun" was rejected. The coexistence of nominative-accusative alignment and absolutive-ergative alignment in Chinese explains a series of long-standing, unsolved problems such as how to identify the subject and object in "WANG Mian si le fuqin" (WANG Mian's father died) or "Tai shang zuozhe zhuxituan" (The presidium are sitting on the stage). The mixed types of word orders in Chinese, i.e., VO-OV, are observed from such a more general perspective. This paper also finds the motivation behind the structures such as ba-sentences, some ambiguous structures, pivotal structure and the possibility of passivization in some structures.

    Abstract146)   HTML3)    PDF (811KB)(406)
The issue of the formation, division and identification of word meanings is worth of attention. In this regard, the word "jiu" can be used as an example. The division of the meanings of "jiu" in Modern Chinese Dictionary needs to be revised. The meanings of adverb "jiu" can be merged from 8 into 3 since 5 of them are not real meanings of "jiu", but pragmatic implications produced by pragmatic inference under the constraints of syntax and sentence meanings. we find that the context which is made up of syntax and sentence meanings plays an important role in the process to determine the meanings of a polysemous word with rather empty meanings. The main difficulty to determine the meanings of a word is how to identify the real meanings of a word when peeling off the tangled pragmatic implications. The formation, division, and identification of word meanings are closely relevant to each other. To be short, when we determine the meanings of a word, or decide whether some meanings of a word should be divided or merged, it is necessary to separate pragmatic implications from the real word meanings, in order to avoid lowering the definition quality of a dictionary, or hindering the correct understanding of the internal mechanism which controls the compositions, characteristics, and the relationships of meanings that the language units or discourse units carry.

This thesis discusses the structural change of syllable pattern from Old Chinese to Middle Chinese and from Middle Chinese to modern Mandarin. Referring to the theory of "distinctive features", especially two pairs of features, i.e. acute vs. grave and plain vs. flat, we provide several cases to exemplify the effect of acute or grave initial consonant or medial on final main vowel, and the effect on each other of initial consonant and final main vowel. These cases show the significance of structural analysis for Chinese historical phonology.

    Abstract288)   HTML4)    PDF (4122KB)(613)
During the first half of the 1960s, as the relationship between Beijing and Moscow deteriorated, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) endeavored to win over the Japanese Communist Party (JCP) under the leadership of Kenji Miyamoto. At the time, the JCP had similar goals and interests as the CCP in taking an anti-imperialist and anti-revisionist stance, disagreeing with the international orientation of the Soviet Communist Party (SCP) and resisting Moscow's interference in its internal affairs. As the discords between the CCP and the SCP came to the open between 1960 and 1963, for the first time the JCP coordinated closely with the CCP in boycotting a "tripartite agreement". Afterwards, in the great polemics of the international communist movement, the JCP further clarified its attitude in supporting the CCP. By 1964 the Sino-Soviet Split became beyond salvage. MAO Ze-dong readjusted China's foreign policy accordingly for the sake of broadening the anti-American united front and constructing an anti-Soviet united front. The CCP and the JCP supported each other politically and organizationally, advancing their cooperation significantly. In 1965, before the new Soviet leadership was able to readjust its approach toward the JCP, the CCP and the JPC joined their efforts together in boycotting the March Conference in Moscow, thus initiating a new round of anti-Soviet struggles for the year. Yet, whereas the JCP was determined to maintain independence, the "Cultural Revolution" loomed large in China, both of which, aside from other factors, cast a shadow over the CCP-JCP relationship and affected the two parties' decisions about their mutual relationship. In the circumstance of the Sino-Soviet Split, the CCP and the JCP were cooperating but actually pursuing different aspirations. In the final analysis, the CCP-JCP relationship could not ultimately escape the fact that inter-party relations of the international communist movement lacked a solid and stable pivot.

    Abstract176)   HTML4)    PDF (801KB)(313)
The Ryukyu Islands were the largest U.S. overseas military base of chemical weapons storage during the Cold War. Ryukyu Islands Chemical Weapons Leak Incident occurred under the dual background of the U.S.-Japan negotiation on the Administrative Power of Ryukyu Islands Reversion and the Nixon Administration's formulation of the U.S. Policy on Chemical Weapons. The Nixon Administration immediately directed the removal of lethal chemical munitions from Ryukyu Islands to CONUS for the redeploy. This was strongly resisted by some members of the U.S. Congress and local governments in Oregon and Washington. The Nixon Administration's approach to dealing with chemical weapons issue was very different from the nuclear weapons issue during the negotiation on the Ryukyu Islands Reversion, neither seeking the right to redeploy chemical weapons nor requiring financial compensation. Such practice was not only determined in NSDM 35, but also was an example of dealing with chemical weapons at the U.S. Military Base in Federal Republic of Germany (FRG). The Military Procurement Act of FY1970 and FY1971 passed by the U.S. Congress has strictly restricted the Pentagon's authority in the research, storage, transportation, testing and procurement of lethal chemical weapons in national legal system.

    Abstract224)   HTML8)    PDF (608KB)(455)
Modern biomedicine based on anatomy and the doctrine of body-mind dichotomy has put forward a universal concept of "body". However, biomedicine is a special culture, that is, a "culture with no culture", and its understanding of body is a product of this special culture. Such a universal concept of body deep in biomedicine is in fact based on a cultural presupposition which only regards white male's body as the norm and ignores the differences of other bodies, especially the woman's body in the patriarchal society. It excludes people's full understanding of gender difference. Such shallow understanding of the body has caused serious social consequences, endangering the health and life of women in modern medical practices. Since 1980s, under the influence of the feminist movement, many medical practitioners have started to remedy the system consciously when realizing the negative impact of ignoring gender difference in medical practice. The increasing gender awareness in the medical field leads to the occurrence of gender medicine. This paper reviews the contributions of gender theories to biomedical knowledge production and cast critical light on the occurrence, institutionalization and development of gender medicine.

Urban space is characterized by diversity and inclusiveness. The development of contemporary globalization brings more opportunities for cultural exchange, communication and integration in the city. It is also constantly creating new local and historical features. Meanwhile, the cultural heritage protection and nostalgia caused by high-speed urbanization and industrialization make many old buildings and traditional handcrafts preserved before they disappear. All of these situations help to form diverse and mixed patterns of urban space. Tianzifang in Shanghai is a miniature. Along with the real life of native residents, the artist's presence creates a strong artistic atmosphere, and modern consumer demand and profit-seeking business bring new and diverse cultural elements to this space. All of these have painted a mottled picture of the contemporary city. This also reminds us to use the theory of hybridity to analyze the results of globalization on the one hand, and realize the positive value brought about by the heterogeneity of urban space.

In the study of historical metropolises, this is a rare illustration not only of the generation of collective memory, but also of the value of folk paintings as an urban cultural heritage. Based on a field investigation in East Harlem, NY., this paper finds that these murals have recorded the "memory of the community" of East Harlem and contributed the "narrative identity" of local people. The nature of this interaction makes the social memory of neighborhood to become a kind of autobiographic memory.

    Abstract175)   HTML5)    PDF (963KB)(310)

Frontier literatures begin to pay close attention to technological progress bias problem, but generally ignore the mismatch between technological progress direction and factor endowment of developing countries. The role of FDI in the multinational technological progress direction transfer has been rarely noticed. Based on this, according to Acemoglu's technology progress bias model, this paper applies the three-equation method of standardized system to calculate the technological progress bias, using panel data to analyze the impact of American direct investment on China's technological progress bias. It also explores the role of technology gap in the transnational transfer which takes FDI as the carrier, and the difference between FDI's horizontal spillover and vertical spillover. The results show that:(1)The technical progress directions of China and the United States are both capital biases. FDI plays an important role in the multinational technological progress bias transfer, which is the reason why China's manufacturing technology progress direction and its factor endowment structure don't match. (2)The transfer effects of different FDI technology spillovers are heterogeneous. Horizontal spillovers and backward spillovers lead to China's capital technological progress bias. (3)There is a threshold effect on the technology progress bias transfer. The larger the technological gap between China and the United States, the more obvious the technology transfer effect.

Technology authority is a common phenomenon in heavy industry cluster. Taking a case of Shanghai Lin'gang equipment manufacturing cluster from the perspective of technology hierarchy and using structural equation model, this thesis analyzes the networking, cooperation and location of innovation under technology authority. Theoretical and empirical research reveals:technology authority is an important factor affecting heavy industry cluster innovation path, and the core firm has the absolute controlling force; the authority cause difficulties in innovation networking, and cluster members cooperate along industry chain, focus more on process innovation than product innovation, and depend on suppliers more than the market; to improve innovation location has no effect on alleviating technology hierarchy, so we should rethink the cluster mode innovation; innovation networking as an important intermediary factor is an effective way to break the technology authority, and the key lies in the efficient integration in manufacturing sector. In order to optimize China's heavy industry cluster innovation and accelerate its innovation upgrading, we should embed in a value chain and an innovation chain by embedding in a production chain through process upgrading to create innovation trends; we need to change the old way of cluster building, reducing the dependence on cluster innovation externalities and focusing on the optimization of manufacturing innovation position to avoid too much dependence on local markets and policies; we should also form a multi-vendor and multi-segment linkage by innovation networking.

Taking the manufacturing, financial, high-tech and cultural industry in the Yangtze River Delta region as the research object, and using the data from 1999 to 2015 of 36 cities in the Yangtze River Delta region to build eight spatial weight matrices, this thesis applies static and dynamic spatial Durbin model (SDM) for empirical analysis of the characteristics of industrial agglomeration development and its short-term and long-term direct, indirect and overall economic benefits to regional economic development. According to the empirical results show that financial agglomeration is unfavorable in the short term but beneficial in the long term to urban economic development. On the contrary, the cluster of manufacturing and high-tech industry is beneficial in the short term but unfavorable in the long term to urban economic development. The agglomeration of cultural industries is not conducive to urban economic development in the short term, and its influence on urban economic development is unclear in the long term. In order to stabilize the leading position of the Yangtze River Delta region in economic development in China, the government needs to ensure industrial agglomeration beneficial to urban economic development through breaking the administrative boundaries, making overall planning, intervening and adjusting its development direction and rhythm.

Journal of East China Normal University (Philosoph    2019, 51 (2): 172-182.   DOI: 10.16382/j.cnki.1000-5579.2019.02.016
    Abstract174)   HTML9)    PDF (881KB)(388)

To study the specific mechanism of the impact of rural convergence of primary, secondary and tertiary industries on farmers' income increase, this paper selects panel data of 31 provinces and cities in China from 2005 to 2014 to test the threshold effect of rural convergence of primary, secondary and tertiary industries on farmers' income increase. It shows that in the model, human capital level in the countryside, rural recreation and sports investment in fixed assets, agriculture, forestry and fishing investment in fixed assets are threshold variables. In different intervals of different threshold variables, the promoting effect on farmers' income with the increasing level of rural convergence of primary, secondary and tertiary industries has remarkable difference. Human capital level in the countryside, recreation and sports investment in fixed assets, agriculture, forestry and fishing investment in fixed assets are unidirectional granger cause of the level of convergence. Therefore, the relevant departments should keep the agriculture, forestry and fishing investment in fixed assets at an appropriate level, cultivate new types of innovation talents and entrepreneurs in agriculture and enhance the integration of recreation, tourism and agriculture in order to improve the effect of rural convergence of primary, secondary and tertiary industries on farmers' income increase.

A Syllable with a Tone: A Starting Point of Interpreting Mandarin Chinese

Journal of East China Normal University (Philosoph    2019, 51 (3): 1-17.   DOI: 10.16382/j.cnki.1000-5579.2019.03.001
    Abstract348)   HTML5)    PDF (2812KB)(284)
There must be some correlation between phonetics and grammar of a language. Mandarin Chinese is featured by the fact that its syllable is with a tone. We can easily find the correlation among the following aspects:the similar structure between syntax and word-building, morphology, word rhyme, poetical meter and the categorization of Chinese characters. A survey of many languages, especially represented by Mandarin Chinese, shows that there is a clear correlation between a syllable with a tone, being monosyllabic, syntactic strategies, and sentence-initial nominal elements. Therefore, we shall pay more attention to the dominating phenomenon of a syllable with a tone, which can function as a starting point of interpreting Mandarin Chinese. The case in Mandarin Chinese is of universal significance.

Several Issues in the Study of the History of the Introduction of Western Learning into China: From the “Doctrine of One-way Culture Transmission” to the Analysis of the Knowledge Type Transformation from the Perspective of Modernity

Journal of East China Normal University (Philosoph    2019, 51 (3): 18-34.   DOI: 10.16382/j.cnki.1000-5579.2019.03.002
    Abstract228)   HTML5)    PDF (3060KB)(572)
The study of the history of the introduction of Western learning into China has experienced a transformation from the "doctrine of one-way culture transmission" to emphasizing mutual communication between the East and the West, and then to a more detailed analysis on the introduction of Western leaning by means of the history of ideas and post-modern methods. The "doctrine of one-way culture transmission" completely examines the cultural exchange between China and the West with the standard of evolvement and science and the traditional culture is taken as a negative object that needs to be transformed. Consequently, the level of the advancement of imported sciences becomes the only measure to judge the success or failure of the knowledge type transformation. After that, some scholars have started to notice that the Chinese tradition is not merely passive in absorbing Western learning but also positive in creating new forms in the process of integration. The study of the interactivity between Chinese and Western ideas has helped us to understand the different meanings of the history of the introduction of Western learning into China.

The Possible Separation in the “Four Domains” and the Relevance of the “Two Worlds”: On FENG Qi's Doctrine of “Four Domains”
    YANG Guo-rong
Journal of East China Normal University (Philosoph    2019, 51 (3): 35-40.   DOI: 10.16382/j.cnki.1000-5579.2019.03.003
    Abstract250)   HTML3)    PDF (893KB)(200)
FENG Qi's ontology of "four domains", including the domain of things as such, that of facts, that of possibilities and that of values, embodies the unity of ontology, epistemology and axiology. However, when things as such, facts, possibilities and values are put into different ontological "domains", it leads to a logical danger that they would be separated from each other. In contrast, the interaction between the world of things as such and the world of reality in the "two worlds" presents another metaphysical horizon. In these "two worlds", the ontological difference by no means excludes the comprehensiveness of the world of reality and the relevance of different ontological "domains". While philosophers in the history such as Russell, JIN Yue-lin and Habermas mainly understand facts from the perspective of epistemology, FENG Qi emphasizes the ontological dimension as well as the epistemological dimension of "facts". This is based on the correlation between interpreting the world and changing the world. From the perspective of metaphysics, this correlation is the premise of transforming the world of things as such to the world of reality. In this regard, FENG's notion of facts implies the "two worlds", which also overcomes the possible separation in the "four domains" to some extent.

The Transcript of FENG Qi's Lectures on Dialectical Materialism is the record of a series of lectures given by FENG Qi at East China Normal University from February 1956 to May 1957. It has not yet been included in the second and expanded edition of the Collected Works of Feng Qi(11 vols.) published in 2016. Compared with other contemporaneous versions of the system of dialectical materialism, the Transcript shows FENG's own personal style and great originality in both integrating Marxist, Chinese and Western philosophical traditions and expounding on some fundamental principles of dialectical materialism. It could be treated as FENG's first systematic achievement in the sinicization of Marxist philosophy. It is also FENG's first attempt to construct his own system of philosophy due to the fact that it includes preliminary discussions on some core issues in his "doctrine of wisdom".

    Abstract230)   HTML3)    PDF (1214KB)(238)
Stimulated by the view that the consciousness of logic and epistemology was underdeveloped in traditional Chinese philosophy, some Chinese philosophers in the 20th century such as ZHANG Dong-sun, JIN Yue-lin and FENG Qi paid much attention to the study of epistemology. Their contribution lies not only in exploring a "metaphysical approach" to epistemology, but also in finding new solutions to the problems of "the narrow epistemology", which has been the main concern of modern Western philosophy. They acknowledge the limitations of sensation but try to find other ways of connecting nature and man, subject and object; they acknowledge the importance of category but try to expound different category systems; they acknowledge the importance of logic but try to expand the "logical foundation" of epistemology. These new solutions to the problems of "narrow epistemology" have been important accomplishments of Chinese epistemology in the 20th century.

Stewards, maternal aunts, wet nurses, main servant girls have special positions in Rong Mansion. In order to maintain a luxurious life and keep it in order, the masters treat them well and endow them with certain rights. They put on airs as if they were masters in front of inferiors, but in fact they are semi-slaves with no personal freedom. These characters have not aroused much attention in the academic circle, for they are not main characters in The Red Mansion Dream. However, they play important roles in the development of the story line and even in the occurrence as well as the solution of conflicts. This paper analyzes the nature, roles and changes of these characters by regarding them as a group based on the descriptions in the novel.

ZHU Zhi-xin's thesis "What is Jesus?" is an anti-Christian text that had a great influence in the anti-Christian Movement in the 1920s. ZHU disenchants the deity and personality of Jesus, but at the same time attempts to "re-mythologize" Jesus with Confucian ideal personality and stylized truism so that the image of Jesus could be used as a designation in his ideological mythology. On the contrary, WANG Zhi-xin's article under the same title tries to build the image of Jesus as a proletarian revolutionary with the characteristics of the times through criticizing ZHU with religious rationality. Effectively, a modern mythology of "Jesusism" is created in the name of anti-mythology in such a way.

The early works of overseas studies of the Miao nationality were mainly influenced by colonialism and linguistic methods. During this period, the missionaries were the majorities conducting the researches. The first work on the Miao nationality, for example, was the French priest Francois-Marie Savina's Histoire des Miao. Later, the Miao studies became more and more diversified in terms of research methods, including anthropology. Anthropologists have become the main force in this stage. In addition, with the development of the Miao studies, local Miao scholars have also grown up and become the writers and researchers of the history of their own nationality. In this setting, how to understand the identity of the Miao nationality and the writing of its history has also become a problem that needs serious discussion.

Contemporary anthropology is increasingly fragmented, lacking in theoretical thinking and grand perspectives. Therefore, the pluralistic development of "anthropologies" should be emphasized. To a certain extent, the idea of "Chinese intellectual resources for anthropology" is to return to the concern of classical anthropology on "human beings" and "a theory of human beings". Furthermore, the emphasis on and excavation of Chinese intellectual resources is not only a historical and textual approach, but also an approach which underlines the empirical nature of anthropology. The combination of these two approaches to exploring Chinese intellectual resources for anthropology means to highlight China's existing historical documents and intellectual on the one hand, and "discover China" both in the practice of everyday life and in the field investigation on the other.

Brahman culture, through direct transmission and indirect introduction via Buddhist Sutras, has exerted great influence on Chinese mythology and novels. The characters and story lines in some widely-spread stories reflect the elements of Brahman culture. The phenomenon that Chinese mythology hasn't become abundant until the Han Dynasty and Chinese novels haven't begun to flourish until the Tang and Song Dynasties is obviously related to the stimulation and influence of Brahmanism and other elements of imported religious Indian culture.

Since taking office, Trump has enforced monist immigration reform by executive power, which means that sovereignty is primary while market and human rights are less important. Trump's immigration policy has initiated shock waves at home and abroad. For the domestic politics in U.S., it has a negative impact on its domestic ethnic relations, economic development, and political ecology, but it is useful to consolidate Trump's voter base. For international relations, this monist immigration policy harms the bilateral relationship between U.S. and its immigrant resource nations. Additionally, global immigration governance crisis has been worsened because U.S.' practice of decreasing the quotas of refugees and reducing the funding for IOM. For China, Trump's immigration reform brings both advantages and disadvantages.

Although family caregivers can play an important role in providing old-age care services, they are still eager to get the support from the outside. As a result of long-term engaged in care work without any support, family caregivers tend to face a lot of physical, mental and social pressure. Therefore, many countries and regions have established various kinds of support policies for family caregivers, including practical, informational, social, psychological and emotional support policies. These policies can not only effectively protect the rights and interests of family caregivers, but also reduce the financial burden of the government. In recent years, the Chinese government has gradually begun to attach importance to the role of family care. However, the policy system and service content need to be improved. China should strengthen rules and regulations to provide financial aid and support services for relatives and caregivers of the elderly living at home.

With the faster speed of population aging and urbanization, the proportion of the elderly living alone in urban areas has risen rapidly. The issue of loneliness has attracted wide attention. The present study examined the prevalence and influence of loneliness among the aged population (those aged 70 and over) living alone in the cities in China. The data used are from the Aged Population Living Alone in Urban Areas Survey. We find that the participants had a moderate level of loneliness, with 40%, 45% and 15% reporting no, sometimes and often suffering from loneliness, respectively. But the heterogeneous groups among people had different risks of being lonely. Loneliness is associated with advancing age, females, widowhood, poorer income and poorer health. Less family support and losing relatives and friends significantly increases the risks of being lonely. More supports, including those from neighbors, community staff and volunteers, are needed to decrease the risk of feeling lonely for the elderly living alone.

In this way,he inherits the spirit of the May Fourth through reflecting on the May Fourth. WANG has lots of deep and unique insights into Chinese and Western theories of literature, philosophy and social politics. We need to further consider how to understand the intellectual issues raised by WANG,how to establish a discourse system of literary theory with Chinese characteristics by re-studying Chinese classical academics, especially classical theories of literature, and how to inherit the spirit of the May Fourth and go beyond it.

In the last hundred years, the study of classical Chinese stylistics has undergone a process from decline to revival, which is essentially a transformation from traditional Chinese stylistics to modern Chinese stylistics. The New Culture Movement and the practice of Reform and Opening up have constituted two significant turning points in this process. In the past century, foreign cultures and the new culture have made contribution to reconstruction while deconstructing traditional Chinese stylistics. In recent decades, the study of Chinese stylistics has returned to tradition at a higher level in the grand structure of world literature. This also reflects the fortune of traditional Chinese academic studies in modern China. The study of Chinese stylistics in the last century has borne the task of "continuing the endangering enterprise of predecessors" and that of "exploring new academic spheres" at the same time.

QIAN Zhong-shu's Notes on Literature and Arts(Tanyilu),Erich Auerbach's Mimesis:The Representation of Reality in Western Literature and M.Bakhtin's Rebelais and His World were created in the time of national crisis,so that they can be comparatively read as literary events in the world. These three books are very different as far as their genres, styles, methodologies and world views are concerned. However, since they were all completed at the wartime, the authors had similar uncontrollable reflection on the decline of civilization and the distress of individual life. Moreover, their grand view of history, broad academic knowledge and deep insight into literary criticism has brought modern significance to "writing in sufferings". Although these three scholars and their works can be interpreted from various perspectives, the overriding concern is not a detailed analysis of some of their works but why and how QIAN,Auerbach and Bakhtin found solutions in literature, which emotions they have put into literary criticism and which images they have relied on to develop their doctrines. Besides their historical backgrounds,we can also examine how these three masterpieces will bring us inspirations in terms of methodology and their political and cultural correlations.

    Abstract223)   HTML6)    PDF (1243KB)(207)
The narrative method "from abstract to concrete" and the research method "from concrete to abstract" constitute basic methodology in Das Kapital, which has been well-demonstrated in the section "Value Form". As for the narrative method,it abides by the principle of identity between(abstract)form structure and (material)content world and the principle of their synchronous development and complete parallelism so that form is an end of material pursuit. Such a narrative method has become a popular research method in today's study of Marxist philosophy. This is a misuse of the methodology of Das Kapital. The research method requires to study the "established subject",which is embodied in Marx's criticism of the economic structure of capitalist society as the content. Only by reflecting on this misuse can we effectively promote the construction of the concept of emancipation.

Reconsiderations on Reification: A Textual Approach to the Chapter of “Commodity” in Das Kapital

With the interpretation of Lukács Gyørgy Bernát and Western Marxism,New Dialectic school and Japanese Marxism, the "reification" has been a focus in contemporary studies of Marxist philosophy. In discussing "reification",the chapter of "Commodity" in Das Kapital is the most referred text,in which the term "reification"is usually used with "Sache","Ding" and "Gegenstand". By examining the process of composition and textual contents,we can find that the chapter of "Commodity" constitutes the starting point of narrative in the three volumes of Das Kapital. Moreover, the sector of fetishism in this chapter plays a particular role of "montage" in leading readers to move from the abstract to the concrete and grasp the capitalist mode of production both historically and logically.

The idea of "a community of shared future for mankind" is one of the significant insights in XI Jin-ping's socialist thought with Chinese characteristics in the new era. The theory of "a community of shared future for mankind" is a contemporary achievement by inheriting and developing Marxist theory of community. The Communist Manifesto has expounded a community of free individuals, the elimination of social confrontation and the creation of public spiritual products, all of which will provide a rich theoretical resource for constructing a community of shared future for mankind, since they are intrinsically linked to the value pursuit, practice path and civilization vision of a community of shared future for mankind.

After the World War II,the returners from Taiwan had carried out various activities, requiring the Japanese government to make compensations for their lost properties during the war. In the interaction between the appeal of the returners, parliament activities and the government's response, the Japanese government adopted different standards. On the one hand,it sought the opportunities of reaching special agreements with foreign countries;on the other hand,it declared the government's having no legal obligation to compensate, gave special subsidies to angry returners through legislation as the final solution, and used the doctrine of the "bearing spirit of citizens" as an intellectual tool to stop the crisis. Whether Japanese people should bear the invasion crime that the Japanese government committed has always been questioned.

After the World War II,there was some tension in Stalin's solution to the German Problem, which caused ambiguity of the Soviet Union's goal in German policy. At first Stalin pursued a unified Germany with a "coalition government" and hoped that it would become a buffer zone of security between the Soviet Union and the West. However, with the break of the Cold War and the failure of the "coalition government" policy in Eastern Europe,Stalin tacitly approved of the establishment of the GDR's government. On the other hand,he still demanded the struggle for the reunification of Germany as the most important political task, and he did not support the official socialist construction in East Germany for a long time. The "Stalin Note" on March 10th,1952 was his last attempt to prevent the integration of the FRG into the western alliance. After the failure of his attempt,Stalin finally accepted the fact of the German split, but he was unwilling to allow the Soviet Union to assume the responsibility of splitting Germany. Stalin's attitude towards the German Problem led to the disagreement in the highest Soviet leadership on the German Problem after his death.

Finally,Thatcher chose to conclude the "Trident" missile agreements with the US in order to consolidate the military-political alliance between the UK and US. These agreements were more conducive to the UK than previous ones, and the US also achieved its own goals, which has helped to raise both the Anglo-American nuclear alliance relationship and the "special relationship" between the UK and US to a new historical height.

Local urban criminal juveniles are different from floating ones in aspects of cultural level, living state, family situation, crime type and so on. From the perspective of containment theory, the cause of the crime of local minors should be analyzed from two aspects, namely, internal factors and external control. Improper family upbringing and learning failure weaken the inherent containment of the juveniles involved, while the absence of social control weakens the external containment of the juveniles involved. To prevent the crime of local urban juveniles,we should improve family upbringing, school education and community service and promote the construction of "juvenile police".

As the basic unit of China's administrative divisions, county is an important platform for the integration of urban and rural development. Under the background of a new era, with the increase of return migration and rural-urban migration within county, and the implementation of the strategy of rural vitalization, it is necessary to accelerate the development of county urbanization. On the basis of related theories on in-situ urbanization, this paper proposes the concept of in-situ urbanization within county. We believe that current characteristics of migration, villagers' migration intentions to move to cities, and national policies are the realistic basis for promoting county-level urbanization development. However, local governments are also facing some problems in the process of promoting county urbanization development. To accelerate the development of county-level urbanization are proposed,we shall increase villagers' abilities to settle in cities, pay attention to returning migrant workers, improve the attractiveness of small and medium-sized cities and small towns, and build distinctive towns.

Multidimensional Policy Effect Analysis of Housing Accumulation Fund System: Also on Promoting Its Balancing Function of both Housing Renting and Purchasing

    Abstract161)   HTML6)    PDF (1825KB)(202)

In order to systematically analyze the policy effect of housing accumulation fund system, this paper subdivides it into three policy dimensions, namely, participation breadth, participation depth, and participation activity, based on the China Household Financial Survey(CHFS)data. We analyze the impact of the first housing, multiple housing, and housing wealth of urban employees in China according to the general life circle of family wealth. Using computation model and regression analysis based on the time series of historical background and sample age characteristics, this paper finds that there are differences in the policy effects of the three dimensions of China's housing accumulation fund system:participation breadth has obvious promotion effect on urban employees' ownership of housing;participation activity has obvious positive effect on housing ownership and housing wealth;participation depth has positive effect on housing wealth. Further date analysis also reveals that the benefiting surface of the housing accumulation fund system is too narrow, which reduces the general value of the system. Especially, the system has basically not been used to housing renting. This paper suggests that the system function orientation should be adjusted, opening the system's function on housing renting in order to construct balanced development of both housing renting and purchasing.

    Abstract192)   HTML5)    PDF (1940KB)(230)

The aging of the population in China is becoming more and more serious and the three pillars of the pension insurance system are out of balance. In order to promote the development of commercial pension insurance as the third pillar and relieve the pension pressure,China has carried out the pilot project of the deferred commercial pension insurance system. The current pilot scheme adopts the so-called "one-size-fits- all"policy. However, under our calculation, some people will not receive tax concession under such a policy. Based on the revised tax rate table of personal income tax,we classify people according to monthly income and calculate corresponding pension tax rate. We put forward some suggestions to improve the current tax deferred pension system in China. Also, the income classification can be converted into the classification of the receiving amount. Finally, the sensitivity analysis of consumer age, retirement age, personal income rate and the threshold of personal income tax are given.

The Cause and Significance of the Japanese Yen as the Main International Transaction Currency

    Abstract425)   HTML12)    PDF (2035KB)(234)

Judging from the volume of transactions in the international foreign exchange market, the yen has become the third largest foreign exchange currency in the world. The reasons why the yen has become a major international exchange currency are as follows. Firstly,Japan has three basic conditions, namely, economic power, trade power and moderate degree of dependence on foreign trade. Secondly,Japan has completely abolished foreign exchange control and established a highly developed financial market by promoting financial liberalization for a long time, thus creating a good market environment for the internationalization of the Japanese yen. Thirdly, through the channels of euro-yen bond, yen international bond, international direct investment and indirect investment,Japan has become a major net creditor country in the world, and the yen is not only universally accepted in Japan, but also has strong universal acceptance all over the world. Finally, the long-term value stability and low interest rate have made the yen a high-quality safe-haven currency and an arbitrage currency with good price,so that it is favored by international investors. We can learn much from the successful experience of the Japanese yen to promote the internationalization of RMB. We should give priority to the realization of free convertibility of RMB and then consider expanding the use of RMB in international transactions. We should build a highly developed domestic financial market and make it become one of the basic conditions for expanding the international trade of RMB. The stability of RMB value and exchange rate should be maintained to make it become an international asset preferred by international investors.

On the Central Exchange Rate and Its Fluctuation Range in a RMB Exchange Rate Target Zone

    Abstract135)   HTML5)    PDF (1759KB)(193)

In the crucial period of RMB internationalization, the top priority for the monetary authorities is a market-oriented reform of the mechanism of RMB exchange rate and an establishment of a RMB exchange rate target zone. It is essential for the establishment of such a target zone is to determine the central exchange rate. Through Johanson co-integration test between nominal exchange rate and labor productivity,it is proved that there exists Barrassa-Samuelson effect in China. With this as the theoretical basis, the VEC model of RMB central exchange rate is estimated by taking into account policy objectives and other factors. According to the error between the central exchange rate and the average exchange rate,it can be determined that the fluctuation range of the target zone is ±[3%-5%]:When the fluctuation of the exchange rate of RMB against US dollar deviates from the central exchange rate within ±3%,the authorities need not intervene;when it touches ±3%,it is regarded as an early warning signal, and if it exceeds ±3%,the intervention depends on the specific situation;and interventions must be carried out when more than ±5%. To this end,the People's Bank of China should further deregulate general position of SSFE,and avoid to intervene passively;a small portion of the excess foreign exchange reserves should be used to set up an exchange stabilization fund to intervene in the foreign exchange market and manage the exchange rate, and the remaining excess foreign exchange reserves should be converted into gold reserves.

    Abstract154)   HTML7)    PDF (2421KB)(234)

The correlation between inflation rate and actual stock return rate has always been one of the hot issues in macroeconomics. By constructing a theoretical model of asymmetric relations between stock return and inflation rate and establishing the Markov Regime-Switching VAR model to explore their relationship under the three-regime system,we come to some conclusions:Stock return is low under low inflation, the highest under moderate inflation and the lowest under hyperinflation, except the coexistence of "deflation and bull market" during the second half of 2014;by giving inflation rate a positive external impact, actual stock return changes reversely in three regimes,so that the "riddle of Fisher Effect" does exist in the A-share market of China;actual stock return rate and inflation rate also show a negative trend when the economic system transits between systems by innovatively applying the regime-switching impulse response function.

On the Effect of Political Connection on Commercial Bank Performance: Also on the Moderating Role of Macroeconomic Goals and Board Governance

    Abstract213)   HTML8)    PDF (1798KB)(235)

The "development view" believes that political connection can promote the performance of commercial banks through interest-transferred government project, while the "political view" believes that political connection can weaken the performance of banks by increasing the bank's non-performing loans through the government-guiding banks to implement economic policies. Based on the panel data of 14 commercial banks from 2007 to 2016,we study the impact of political connection on bank performance, and explore the moderating effect of government's macroeconomic goals and board governance. The empirical analysis shows that political connection can significantly improve the banks' financial performance, while political connection can also increase the banks' non-performing loan ratio. The macroeconomic goals will reduce the positive impact of political connection on banks' financial performance, but it will increase the positive impact of political connection on bank non-performing loan rate. Board governance structure does not affect the relationship between political connection and bank financial performance, but it will reduce the positive effect of political connection on banks' non-performing loan rate.

With ordinal logistic regression, this study analyzes the impact of employment quality and urban social inclusion on migrant workers health status. Based on the survey data of migrant workers in four southeast coastal cities in China, this study shows that their employment quality has a significant direct impact on their health status. Specifically, higher income, the participation in trade unions, the participation in vocational trainings, and higher job satisfaction contributes have positive effect, while working overtime and living in dormitory are negative. Besides, another significant element is migrant workers' sense of urban social inclusion, which plays a role as a mediator between their employment quality and health status. Therefore, to improve migrant workers' health status, we should not only further labor market and employment quality but promote urban social inclusion as well.

Discrimination against Rural Household at Urban Migrant Labor Market

Journal of East China Normal University (Philosoph    2019, 51 (5): 11-23.   DOI: 10.16382/j.cnki.1000-5579.2019.05.002
    Abstract206)   HTML16)    PDF (2117KB)(201)
Existing research on labor market discrimination against labors mainly focuses on the wage difference among labors with local household and migrant labors, but nearly no attention has been paid to the wage difference and potential discrimination among migrants with urban household and those with rural household. Nonetheless, the comparability between local labor and migrant labor is low while much higher among different sectors of migrant labors. Moreover, rural migrant labors may be more sensitive to unequal treatment and discrimination among migrant labors. Research on this issue therefore would be significant for policy making. Against the backdrop of new urbanization process, it is important to investigate how the situation about discrimination against labors with rural household holders in the Chinese urban migrant labor market. Based on existing literature, we conduct theoretical discussions on the phenomenon and mechanisms regarding labor market discrimination against rural migrant labors. We employ the Oaxaca-Blinder model and data from China Migrants Dynamic Survey(CMDS) by the National Population and Family Planning Commission of P.R. China for quantitative measurement. The results reveal that discrimination against rural household holders at urban migrant labor market prevails in most of the Chinese cities. On the average, discrimination against rural household holders can explain 30-40% of the wage difference between migrant labors with rural household and migrant labors with urban household. Meanwhile, the extent of labor market discrimination due to rural household varies significantly across subgroups of rural migrant labors who differ in genders, age, and industries. Further, this paper also finds that the city-level magnitude of discrimination against rural household holders will first decline and then rise along with the increase of city size, appearing in a U-shaped curve. This paper discusses the policy implications of these findings. Relevant departments should protect the legitimate rights and interests of rural household holders while carrying out household system reform to eradicate discrimination against rural household holders at migrant labor market. Differential treatments based on household such as public service and social benefits ought to be lifted off. Meanwhile, cities should advance household system reform in accordance with their actual conditions and characteristics.

    Abstract215)   HTML16)    PDF (1662KB)(223)
A community is an important cell of the national governance, a cornerstone and basic unit of the national governance system. Community governance has its own operation logic and realization path. As the condensation of small politics, weak politics and low politics, a community has its basic orientation of emotional politics and life politics. Therefore, this paper puts forward a proposition that a community is a feminine governance space. Feminization has two meanings. First, from the perspective of social attributes, a community is a flat, anti-bureaucratic governance field, so that the fact that community governance relies on process-orientation, emotion-orientation and participation-orientation directly leads to the warmth of a community. Second, from the perspective of natural attributes, community governance is mainly carried out by women due to their advantages in character and communication. The social and natural attributes of community governance directly contribute to the continuous accumulation of social capital along the gendered path in a community. This paper answers the question why the community governance is dominated by women and analyzes the gendered characteristics. In the feminine space, social capital has achieved continuous accumulation by the ways of institutionalization, beneficence and socialization. However, the emergence of beneficial politics in the housing-rights society has made the accumulation mechanism face the challenge of weakening even interrupting. How to combine the emotional politics and beneficial politics in community governance and explore the sustainable dynamics of community development has become important mission for social governance at China's urban grassroots.

    Abstract301)   HTML18)    PDF (1801KB)(389)
Examining the relationship between residential committees and residents, this paper builds a ladder model of resident participation with eight levels, i.e., being an onlooker, being demanded, trying to enter, being accepted, entering "inside", being autonomous, leading and keeping balance. This model reveals the development of resident participation from passive participation to cooperative participation and then to autonomous participation. Based on intersubjective relationship, the participation ladder of Chinese local residents is different from the power-centered model of foreign countries. Behind the slow development of resident participation ladder is the logical paradox between grassroots governance and community autonomy. In China's national conditions, resident participation may eventually lead to a "balanced" participation stage, which will provide a certain reference for future development of resident participation in urban communities.

    Abstract175)   HTML19)    PDF (1629KB)(213)
Social organization is an important structural force in addition to the administrative force in a city, so the governing of social organization is significant for urban governance. The old institutionalism focuses on law and the central role of law in governing, accordingly the documents of law and policy constitute the formal governing framework. Social organization governing in China is characterized by a smooth change "from control to development", which is a kind of "selective development", "trend development" and "key development". First, functional social organization that provides services is gradually stronger in the survival competition; second, the government provides continuous resource supply and policy incentives for the development of social organization; third, comprehensive supervision on social organization confines its democratic consultation capacity. The "legal-institutional" framework of social organization governance reflects the tendency of "governing by documents" and "governing by departmental regulations", and the practice of the rule of law need to be further developed.

Data Discipline in Urban Governance under the Condition of Big Data Technology

    Abstract188)   HTML13)    PDF (1190KB)(202)
Urban governance aims to construct a sound order. In accordance with economic development, the way of order discipline has changed from moral discipline to behavioral discipline and then to legal discipline. While the validity of legal discipline is influenced by subjective factors of law makers, technological progress can offset this flaw. The practice of using big data technology in urban governance adopts the method of data discipline to maintain urban order. Technology has always been a double-edged sword. It brings convenience, but also causes harm due to the selfishness of different members in human community. This is the alienation of technology. While big data plays an active role in constructing an orderly city and its discipline helps to create "absolute security" in a city, data discipline is based upon the premise of sacrificing privacy, which results in a kind of fear in "absolute security". The urban governance under the condition of big data cannot remove such fear in a short time. However, urban governance should ultimately restore to its people-oriented essence and technology should serve people better under moral discipline.

The extant literature hasn't exploited the effects of homeownership and heterogeneous human capital on urban innovation. Employing the city-level databases of China's 69 large- and middle-sized cities during 2010-2015, this paper elucidates the intermediary effects of homeownership on innovation. The research finds that homeownership has negative effects on innovation input and output. Thus, homeownership and rental markets should be developed in balance. Homeownership affects innovation by virtue of housing price rather than population migration. As such, we should prevent the negative impact of housing price volatility on innovation. Moreover, the effects of homeownership on innovation are more significant and greater in lower human capital cities than that in higher human capital cities. Hence, we should pay more attention to the innovation in lower human capital cities.

As a result of development of globalization at the high end, global cities are usually built on the network of global transportation and telecommunication. The network started from a regional network between cities to a city network within a nation, and ended in the global city network. In such a development, international trade plays an important role for connecting cities at different levels. A city network at higher levels is the accumulation of the networks below it. For example, the global city network is a pyramid of the accumulation of the global city network in a narrow sense, national city networks and regional city networks. Accordingly, regional cities, national cities and global cities are cultivated at respective levels. For a city network of high ranks, the layout of the network consists of cities at its level and below. For this reason, the hierarchical global city network consists of regional city networks, national city networks and the global city network in a narrow sense. Meanwhile, global cities stand at the top of the pyramid. Based on the discussion above, we finally come to the law behind the changes of global cities, which we should follow in the construction of global cities.

Retrospect and Reflection on the Study of Urban Social Structure in China in the Past 40 Years: An Analysis based on the Research Findings in CNKI & CSSCI

Urban is not only the field where all kinds of modern elements flow, but also the subject of social structure transformation. By reviewing the relevant papers collected in CNKI and CSSCI, we find that China's urban social structure research in the past 40 years focuses on six aspects, that is, urban and rural structure, urban consumption structure, urban class structure, urban space structure, urban employment structure and urban population structure, in which urban and rural structure is dominant. In the past 40 years, the research on China's urban social structure has generally gone through three stages of low-speed growth, rapid development and fluctuating development, which respectively focuses on rural areas, urban and rural structure and then cities. Only with a broader global vision, a more solid theoretical basis and a greater focus on the subjectivity of a city can future studies of urban social structure understand social structure better and then provide theoretical and practical guidance for the transformation of urban social structure.

Industrial Integration Driven by Urban Agglomeration and the Rising of the Global Value Chain: A Case Study of the Yangtze River Delta

Journal of East China Normal University (Philosoph    2019, 51 (5): 90-98.   DOI: 10.16382/j.cnki.1000-5579.2019.05.010
    Abstract222)   HTML16)    PDF (1629KB)(203)
The process of forming global urban agglomeration is essentially a process in which a region builds a super industry cluster by improving the status of the global value chain. After nearly 30 years of integrated development, the Yangtze River Delta has gradually formed the prototype of global urban agglomeration. However, compared with the mature corresponding ones, it still needs improvements. At present, the overall degree of specification in the Yangtze River Delta Urban Agglomeration(YRDUA) is relatively high, but due to the regional industrial development differentiation, there is level difference in the global value chain between the north and south wings of the YRDUA, which fails to fully exert the scale effect and network effect that the urban agglomeration should have. This level difference and high industrial similarity also provide the driving force for industrial integration between the sub-megalopolis in the YRDUA. Therefore, in the context of the high-quality integrated development of the YRDUA, the sub-megalopolis such as the north and south wings of the YRDUA should take advantage of the opportunity of the construction of the metropolitan area. Through the intra-region specification within the industry, local integration will be used to promote global integration, furthermore, it will consolidate and deepen the industrial and regional advantages of the YRDUA.

    Abstract191)   HTML15)    PDF (1487KB)(239)
Under the background of the integrated development of the Yangtze River Delta into a national strategy, it is of great significance to study the impact of coordinated innovation on economic growth in the Yangtze River Delta Urban Agglomeration(YRDUA). Based on the data(2007-2017) of 26 cities in the YRDUA, the dynamic change characteristics of coordinated innovation development of urban agglomerations is studied by constructing the collaborative innovation spatial contact gravity model and the collaborative innovation spatial correlation model. Then, the impact of coordinated innovation on economic growth is explored by spatial lag model. The result shows that in the YRDUA, there are obvious regional differences in the spatial connection strength of collaborative innovation, but the overall spatial connection of collaborative innovation is increasing; the spatial linkage of collaborative innovation presents significant spatial correlation, and spatial agglomeration is obvious; basically, the innovation cluster district with Shanghai, Suzhou, Nanjing and Hangzhou as the endpoints of high collaborative innovation capability has been formed; the collaborative innovation has a significant spatial spillover effect, which promoted the regional economic growth through direct effect, indirect effect and total effect. Therefore, to improve the integrated development of the YRDUA, we should strengthen the spatial linkages of collaborative innovation with the YRDUA, make central cities play a more active role and further the collaborative innovation system in the YRDUA.

    Abstract126)   HTML12)    PDF (2538KB)(280)
Green innovation is the key to cultivating new drivers of urban development. This paper is devoted to analyzing and comparing the green innovation efficiency and spatial association characteristics of 26 cities at or above the prefectural level in the Yangtze River Delta Urban Agglomeration(YRDUA). It is of vital importance to promote higher quality integrated development of the YRDUA. Considering that the traditional DEA model does not consider "relaxation" of factors and cannot reasonably solve the efficiency evaluation problem under the condition of non-expected output, this paper uses Super-SBM and GML index as new models to measure the green innovation efficiency at urban scale, and depicts the spatial characteristics of the YRDUA. The result shows that:(1) The green innovation efficiency of 26 cities in the YRDUA is on the rise as a whole, and the driving forces are mainly from technical efficiency, while technological progress lags behind technological efficiency. (2) From the perspective of spatial correlation, the difference of green innovation efficiency between 26 cities tends to narrow in the YRDUA, and the green innovation efficiency of the YRDUA tends to be integration. (3) There exist four types of combinations between the efficiency of urban green innovation and the level of economic development in the YRDUA, i.e., high-high, high-low, low-high and low-low. Finally, some policy suggestions are put forward. High-high cities should further improve green innovative technologies and gradually abandon or upgrade industries with high pollution and high input; then low-high cities are more suitable for capital-intensive development; high-low cities should realize the coordinated development of green economy by improving the conversion efficiency; low-low cities should pay attention to the problems of industrial structure and speed up the improvement of the efficiency of scientific and technological research and development.

    Abstract181)   HTML12)    PDF (3009KB)(316)
The coupling coordination degree is an important index to measure the coordinated development level of industry, transportation and environment. This paper uses the coupling coordination model to conduct an empirical study on the cooperative development relationship of industry, transportation and environment in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei from 2006 to 2016. It is found that the industry, transportation and environmental of Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region show a trend of fluctuation and rise, and the three are closely related. The coupling coordination degree of "industry-transportation-environment" system in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region decreases slightly in some years, but the overall performance is stable growth. The regions with good coupling coordination degree are distributed in the "southeast" line of Beijing. There is no spatial correlation in the coordinated development of system coupling. In addition, by comparing the coupling coordination level of the three major urban agglomerations in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei, Yangtze River Delta and Pearl River Delta, it is found that the three major urban agglomerations show similar development trends and spatial distribution characteristics during the research period, the coupling coordination level of the three major urban agglomeration systems is relatively low, and they are all in the stage of barely coordinated development.

    Abstract140)   HTML14)    PDF (1598KB)(243)
Regional development, especially balanced development, involves coordinated development of many aspects. Based on the overall planning of Changning District, Shanghai in 1994 and its implementation in past 20 years, this paper systemically analyzes the change from unbalanced development to balanced development of Changning. The result shows three concrete practices in regional development, that is, space coordination, time coordination and element coordination. The case of Changning shows that the change from unbalanced development to balanced development is achievable. Balanced development result from time, space and element coordination. Balanced development has a gradient and it is measurable. To move from unbalanced development to balanced development, we must carry out misplaced development, simultaneous development and coordinated development of different regions by paying attention to each region's own location advantages, resource endowment advantages and development foundations and conditions.

    Abstract175)   HTML25)    PDF (1813KB)(217)
In the globalized urban era, Marxist philosophy is not only strongly required to pay attention to urban issues, but also to establish a philosophical research paradigm of "Metromarxism" with urban society as its main body. This paradigm should not only include a general historical perspective of modern critique of political economics, but also have a good humanistic spirit and rich dialectical imagination, which is manifested as a kind of spatial dialectics. F.Jameson and H.Lefebvre have provided us with a methodological model in their respective ways, and thus promoted a new philosophy of urban dialectical materialism. Contemporary China's urban social development is in the pattern of spatial contradiction, in which spatial production dominated by global capital, socialist countries' modernization governance, and people's yearning for a better life are intertwined. One of the most important problems facing "Metromarxism" is how to take root in Chinese traditional cultural wisdom and contemporary local practical experience and knowledge, so as to enable residents to live poetically in modern urban society.

    Abstract155)   HTML15)    PDF (1030KB)(146)
Space production is the essential content and motive of social development, as well as an important measure of the degree and vitality of an area's development. By "coating" we mean the artificial overlap of heterogeneous objects and the development of coating skills is significant for social development. Through coating, objects can be more durable. Meanwhile, human production and life will cost less and be more gorgeous with its image being improved. However, coating may also lead to alienation. The coatization of space production is the excessive, generalized and alienated application of coating skills and coating strategies in space production area so that it is an evil one-no matter it is apparent or hidden. The coatization of space production is closely related to the secularization of the zeitgeist, the aggregation effect of urban society and the multiplication of modern skills. Although the coating strategy is needed in modern social production, coatization may cause multiple harms such as constructing troubled space that is unsustainable, affirming and reproducing human contradictions, deepening the inherent contradictions of social relations, enchanting and distorting the world of meaning. To reduce and prevent the coatization of space production, the space production, coating techniques, the aim and process of space coating are needed to be ethically constrained. Also, the ethical qualities and capacity possessed by the multiple subjects of space production should be continuously improved.

    Abstract216)   HTML13)    PDF (1617KB)(198)
Urban philosophy in the 20th century is generally characterized by "unthinking", by which Immanel Wallerstein means opening new perspectives by questioning the given premises and by debating. There are three phases for urban unthinking:the critique of industrial cities made by E.Howard, P.Geddes et al., which promoted the development of urban planning in the early 20th century; the challenges to the existing planning science and orthodox theories proposed by J.Jacobs, H.Lefebvre et al., which promoted the forming of subversive perspective of urban politics during 1960s-70s; the deconstruction of popular ideas on modern cities, geography and space by radicalism under the influence of the revolution in May, 1968, which resulted in the spread of anti-essentialist, heterogeneous and pluralist urban discourses after 1970s. Urban unthinking that regards alternative lifestyles as its aim elaborates that planning is the way to build humane cities. However, it also emphasizes that the intricate order of its aim cannot be built merely by planning. It reveals that urban world is a horizon to attract creative practice for good life.

By urban literature we mean the literature which presents people's psychic repression in an international metropolis rather than the city literature in the traditional dualist framework of the rural and the urban. We can discuss the possibility of urban literature from two dimensions. The first is how a writer can create incomplete urban personalities and how people can understand broken spirit. The characters in traditional novels are generally intact and clear, while in the metropolitan culture there are incomplete personalities with spiritual rupture. The second is the crises in terms of humanity, families and ethics resulted from spiritual pressure and rupture.

Literature is impacted by its birthplace, while it also endows the place with symbolic significance. Myths, legends, epics, works of sages and modern literature have always influenced travel. Under the multi-effects of ideology, the conception of history, mass tourism and other factors, the literary landscapes constructed around the heritage of literature, as an important element in the structure of tourism and spatial planning of various cities, play a role of media and bridge between literature and reality, the past and the present, as well as the local and the world. In the contemporary international tourism, literary landscapes influence the impression and evaluation of tourists on a place or a country and even become an important element in the building of the image of a country in travel writings.

Urban history is different from urban historiography. The former is an object of study, whereas the latter, is a subdivision within the modern discipline of historiography. Urban historiography studies the origin, development, and transformation of cities as well as the process of urbanization from the perspective of historiography. The rise of urban historiography results from the great impact of rapid urbanization upon society, the rapid development of historiography, and the influence of other academic disciplines. Arising since the end of World War Ⅱ, "urban historiography" as a discipline has been generally accepted in the academic circle. It is giving inspirations to observe the transformations of human civilization from the urban perspective. If stretching the time scale of urban historiography to cover the whole of the 20th century, we may find that it has gone through several important changes as the time goes by. Therefore, critical studies of urban historiography for the purpose of learning experience from others and establishing our own theoretical frames and conceptual systems of urban historiography are theoretically and practically significant.

Since 1949, the society in Shanghai has witnessed great revolutionary changes. However, the orientation of urban culture and taste in daily life hidden behind these changes have not gone completely. Observing some scenarios in the novels, i.e., WANG Cheng-zhi's The Alley of Tonghe, WANG An-yi's The Age of Enlightenment and JIN Yu-cheng's Blooming Flowers, from a perspective of historical study, we can find that there is not only rupture but also continuity between the old and the new ages. Even in the age of great unrest, the modernity in Shanghai tenaciously survived in a hidden way. Historical memories and cultural inertia coexist in drastic intergenerational replacement in Shanghai, which has formed the fundamental vitality and characteristic of Shanghai culture.

The activity of "Jiangning in Memory" conducted by Jiangning Road Sub-district Office, Jing'an District, Shanghai is a response to the rapid change of an urban block by retaining local collective memory. By applying multiple qualitative research methods such as non-participatory observation, household interview, depth interview of key figures and text analysis, this paper explores whether a cultural map could be an effective carrier of local collective memory, and analyzes the mechanism of subject participation and its influence on the construction of local collective memory through the compilation process of a cultural map. It is found that the cultural map in the activity of "Jiangning in Memory" can be an effective carrier for the construction of local collective memory, within which the residents' participation is an important condition. There exists unequal power relationship among different subjects in the compilation of a cultural map and its elements selection, which shows that the local collective memory carried by a cultural map is also a result of social construction. Finally, this paper discusses the significance of the activity of "Jiangning in Memory" for urban space making and the construction of local collective memory.

    Abstract193)   HTML14)    PDF (1852KB)(227)
In recent years, the study of European urban history has witnessed the rise of the national perspective. Different from the tradition of emphasizing autonomous cities, this new perspective focuses on the interaction between a nation-state and its cities, and examines the nation-state development by investigating the cities. The construction of France as a nation-state is a long process of temporal and spatial evolution. It was not merely a product of modern construction, since the development of the city in the late Middle Ages had laid a spatial foundation for it. The control of the feudal territory and the expansion of the border areas by the Valois Dynasty effectively promoted the formation of the monarchy's territorial state. In order to effectively control the country and expand the territory, the crown convened hierarchical councils in regional central cities, set up courts, integrated national transportation and strengthened national economic layout, developed national markets in major cities and transformed frontier cities. These measures reflected the creation of France as a modern nation-state based on cities and centered on strengthening the kingship. Studying the formation of a country by investigating a city provides us with a new perspective.

The problem of urban coal smoke pollution had become increasingly serious since the steam engine drove the industrial revolution in Britain. All the British society looked for solutions, within which the smoke abatement legislation was very important. The Public Health(Smoke Abatement) Act of 1926 was the result of the efforts to introduce legislation to reduce smoke emissions in the UK since the 19th century. It had a relatively clear definition and punishment measures for commercial smoke emission in the UK, and had made some achievements in dealing with coal smoke pollution in the industrial society. It used national legislation to control air pollution, which provided a legal basis for smoke abatement and set a precedent for similar legislation in the future.

    Abstract295)   HTML33)    PDF (2368KB)(318)
As a philosophical performance, the historical research of ideas focuses on grand ideas, which are "settled intellectual ‘products’" of a particular culture, and their historical development as well. The interest and motive of this research mainly lies in the belief that ideas are powerful. Major social ideas not only originate from the existing social relations but in turn reshape them. They may be powerful in persuading or moving persons, but it is also possible for them to be coercive and even violent. Ideas are powerful since they are logically "unclear" or "obscure", which makes them structurally different from "concepts". Hence, the abundant implications of ideas do not simply result from rational elements but also from emotional and volitional ones. The rational power of ideas impels theoretical expressions and even philosophical systemic construction, which will strengthen the persuasive power of ideas, whereas the emotional and intentional elements not only make ideas become moving but also actualized as material force in the process of institutionalization. Spreading from individuals to groups is necessary for an idea to realize its power, which is often enlarged because it frequently ignites trends of thought in a modern society. In this process, an idea itself will probably experience transformations at an intellective level. The realization of the power of ideas is eventually restricted by social conditions.

    Abstract294)   HTML39)    PDF (1309KB)(169)
Why can morality and law be mentioned in the same breath? Why can they be combined? Because both of them are special forms of social values, symbolizing the dominating will and pursue of meaning in a society. The mainstream values in the society are maintained through institutions and the belief system, and the legitimacy and ethicality of modern nations as well as their laws are based on justice. Morality and law are established on the same value foundation and consciousness structure. Kant divided moral theories("freedom" opposite to "nature") into rechtslehre and virtue theories, whereas the Confucian tradition combines li(rites), fa(law or legal punishment), morals and politics, which provides the foundation for the combination of morality and law and shows a long history of this practice. Law has its value foundation, that is, only law that meets certain requirements of morality or justice can be dubbed conscience law. It is perceived that law of equity originates from absolute natural law, "natural justice" that is beyond and able to correct human law. Law makers should master the art of law making as well as its principles and spirit to make sure that laws and regulations embody national value aims, social value orientation and citizens' value criterions. Law is at service of social aims and benefits, and the items of law should imply inherent connotations, spirit and conscience. Morality needs the protection of law, while law should aim to elevate virtues and humanity and hence the government is accountable to cultivating the morals of citizens and virtues of the public. In different social cultures, the connotations of ruling by law and ruling by morality as well as their realization methods have different features.

    Abstract246)   HTML19)    PDF (1013KB)(160)
It is generally assumed that the organizational power of a primary party organization is equivalent to its organizational capacity. However, this is not true. The organizational power of a primary party organization includes not only its organizational capacity in structure, but also its governance capacity in function, i.e., the resultant force formed by the "substitution rate" among organizational elements. The former is a kind of hard power influenced by organizational density, while the latter a kind of soft power influenced by functional density of the organization. The measures of organizational density include organizational coverage, job coverage and institution coverage, while the measures of functional density include functional coverage and functional substitution rate. Therefore, under the framework of organizational density-functional density, two dimensions, five major systems and dozens of basic items and specific indicators under them constitute the evaluation system of the organizational power of a primary party organization. In spite of its strong theoretical and practical value, this evaluation system has certain limits in guiding primary party construction and social governance. If we blindly emphasize the enhancement of the organizational density and functional density of a primary party organization, it will easily lead to the "involution" of primary governance structure and function.

Reconstruction of Rights in Confucianism and Its significance
    CHEN Qiao-jian
Journal of East China Normal University (Philosoph    2019, 51 (6): 29-41.   DOI: 10.16382/j.cnki.1000-5579.2019.06.004
    Abstract228)   HTML16)    PDF (2406KB)(279)
Pertaining to the relationship between Confucianism and rights, there are two opponent views in the academic circle:One holds that they are compatible, while the other insists that they are incompatible. The latter gradually shifts their viewpoint from "Confucianism does not deserve rights" to "rights do not deserve Confucianism". Those who hold that Confucianism and rights are incompatible deny either rights or Confucianism. In spite of this difference, they insist the special origin of "rights" and adopt a historicist methodology, believing that the discourse on "rights" cannot be applied to interpret Confucianism and even the ancient Western world. By analyzing the gist of the concept of "right" and the classification of rights and examining two different understandings of the origin of the concept of "right", especially anthropologic understanding, this paper reconstructs relative ideas in classic Confucianism with the discourse on rights so as to effectively interpret the Confucian idea of "right", convincingly respond to the arguments of those who hold that Confucianism and rights are incompatible and hence develop the doctrine that Confucianism and rights are compatible. This reconstruction of rights in Confucianism will benefit to the developments of both Confucianism and rights and defend the rationality and desirability of rights.

Self-centered Transcendence or Self-overcoming Transcendence?: The Dimension of the Other in Confucian Metaphysical Transcendence

    Abstract266)   HTML18)    PDF (1584KB)(183)
To prove the legitimacy of Confucianism against the backdrop of the contention between China and the West since the modern times, scholars have emphasized that Confucianism, as Western philosophy, embraces transcendence on the one hand, and Confucian transcendence is internal while Western transcendence external on the other. However, it has been ignored that the transcendence in Western philosophy is self-centered while Chinese transcendence is self-overcoming since Confucianism advocates the inclusion of the other from both temporal and spatial dimensions in the real world. It is due to the fact that Confucianism advocates self-overcoming that it pays more attention to one's moral responsibilities to the other rather than one's rights as well as one's derived duties to the other. This may help to ease the intense conflict rooted in the prevalent consciousness of right.

“Enlightenment”: A Thinking Mode in Traditional Chinese Moral Philosophy

Journal of East China Normal University (Philosoph    2019, 51 (6): 51-59.   DOI: 10.16382/j.cnki.1000-5579.2019.06.006
    Abstract416)   HTML26)    PDF (1592KB)(322)
"Enlightenment"(wu) is a moral cognitive practice that aims to elevate individuals' moral realms under a comprehensive effect of moral emotions, moral rationality and moral actions. It constitutes a unique thinking mode in traditional Chinese moral philosophy. Semantically, the Chinese word "wu" originally means physical "awakening", and then it extends to mean spiritual "enlightenment". By examining the relationship between "enlightenment", "Dao" and "body"(ti), we find out that "Dao" is the purpose of "enlightenment", while "body" and "enlightenment" manifest a common cognitive method in Confucianism. WANG Yang-ming's personal experience of the "enlightenment of Dao" reveals "enlightenment" as the thinking mode in traditional Chinese moral philosophy:taking the "Dao of becoming a sage" as its purpose, experiencing "doubt", "puzzlement", "encountering", "thoroughness" and "proving" step by step, and eventually "realizing the Dao".

    Abstract489)   HTML15)    PDF (2101KB)(523)
After the failure of the Great Revolution, lots of young leftists in Kuomintang were killed by Chiang Kai-shek even though they were not members of the Chinese Communist Party. Those who survived continued to explore possible roads of Chinese revolution. The radical disposition of young people at that time resulted from their own subjective appeals rather than the manipulation of the CCP. Kuomintang's suppression of revolutionary young people further led to the corruption within Kuomintang and the entire society, pushed radical young to approach the CCP and ultimately overturned the regime of Kuomintang. It is conducive to understanding the inevitability and rationality of the Chinese revolution to study the explorations of young leftists in Kuomintang on the future of China and that of themselves by focusing their subjectivity in historical events after the failure of the Great Revolution.

The Concept of “Labor” and Its Impact on Women's Domestic Labor from the Late Qing Dynasty to the Republic of China

Journal of East China Normal University (Philosoph    2019, 51 (6): 70-79.   DOI: 10.16382/j.cnki.1000-5579.2019.06.008
    Abstract270)   HTML10)    PDF (1857KB)(382)
Since the late Qing Dynasty, "labor" in Chinese context has gradually become a key political-economic concept emphasizing the collective productive labor exercised in modern factories and public spaces. By placing public labor in industry and agriculture at the top of the hierarchy and unpaid household labor at the bottom, the modern concept of labor overshadowed housework that has been traditionally done by women. Despite of multiple implications of labor and different evaluations of women's household labor, productive labor became the mainstream of the times and the issues on women's household labor were marginalized during the May 4th period. Discourses that advocated a modern perspective of labor sought to eliminate household labor by adopting community cooperation and even the whole set of class revolution, and then absorb woman labor force emancipated from housework into productive labor. In the period of the Republic of China, according to the definition of labor law, while productive labor was ascribed to labor law and the paid household labor ascribed to the margin of labor law, the unpaid woman household labor was ascribed to civil law, which strengthened the perception that women's bearing of housework is their duty to family.

The Interconnected East Asia and the 1919 Independence Movement of Korea: A Revolution Being Learned

    Abstract292)   HTML18)    PDF (2215KB)(334)
From a perspective of the interconnected East Asia and the global, the cause of the 1919 Independence Movement of Korea was that the participants of the Movement hoped to make full use of the "global moment" when the international order was changing and echo the transformation of the global history with a national social revolution. In addition, the oppression from the colonial authorities contributed another reason for this collective campaign. The participants, media and aims of the Movement consisted of the gathering experience of "people", whose feature was the coexistence of modernity and traditionally as well as the reconstruction of their meaning under the condition of colony. If revolution does not only mean the overturn of political power, but the large-scale transformation of the society as a whole, i.e., the fundamental transformation of thought and culture and the strengthening of the subjective status of the people, then the 1919 Independence Movement of Korea can be perceived as a revolution. Since the result of the Movement presented as "incremental achievements", it can be dubbed a "revolution of continuous learning" or an "on-going revolution".

Academic Interpretation of Folk Buddhism and a New Understanding of the History of Chinese Buddhism

    Abstract225)   HTML12)    PDF (1280KB)(276)
The understanding of the history of Chinese Buddhism has always been restricted by elite scholars' academic interpretation of classics, while the folk class' practical application of classics has been ignored. Due to the different ways of using and explaining classics of these two different social strata, there have formed different meanings of classics and different development paths as well. With the absence of authority and the immersion of faith, people at the grassroot level have completely subverted the original system of classical interpretation and invented so-called folk Buddhism. The interaction between elite Buddhism and folk Buddhism and the co-existence of elegance and vulgarity has shaped the internal structure of Chinese Buddhism. We may not only explain this phenomenon from the perspective of classical interpretation and its practical variation, but also interpret academically the belief-type Buddhism via classical interpreting approaches so as to gain a new understanding of the history of Chinese Buddhism.

Modern Humanistic Buddhism and a Re-examination of Buddhist “Tradition” from the Perspective of Philosophical Hermeneutics
    CHENG Gong-rang
Journal of East China Normal University (Philosoph    2019, 51 (6): 98-106.   DOI: 10.16382/j.cnki.1000-5579.2019.06.011
    Abstract329)   HTML17)    PDF (1622KB)(203)
From the very beginning, Modern Humanistic Buddhism has had its value pursuit of adapting to modern social and cultural needs by reforming the shortcomings of the traditional Buddhism. Therefore, many people are accustomed to understanding Modern Humanistic Buddhism as opposite to traditional Buddhism. This paper holds that such an understanding of Humanistic Buddhism is not enough, and it fails to reveal the essence and value of Humanistic Buddhism. By referring to the concepts of "foresight" and "tradition" in Gadamer's philosophical hermeneutics in Truth and Method, this paper attempts to clarify and explain Modern Humanistic Buddhism's real attitude towards and its basic idea of "tradition" since the 20th century. The study shows that the main purpose of Modern Humanistic Buddhism's understanding of tradition is to achieve wisdom to break through the barrier between the ancient and the modern, eliminate the opposition between the old and the new and resolve the dispute between the traditional and the modern. This wisdom towards "tradition" is quite similar to the concept of "tradition" in modern Western philosophical hermeneutics. What's more, it can also provide some Buddhist inspiration to dispel the internal tensions between the traditional and the modern, rationality and foresight, subjectivity and objectivity, and particularity and universality in the context of Western philosophical hermeneutics.

    Abstract341)   HTML14)    PDF (2226KB)(522)
In the 1980s, based on the concept of multilingual education and multiculturalism, Australia produced its national language policy and became the first among English-speaking countries to have such a policy. Since then, Australia has adopted a series of policies to protect and maintain aboriginal languages. In the 21st century, however, under the pressure of globalization, the Australian administration has strengthened English education both at home and abroad. While continuing supporting their languages, the government also wants Australian aboriginals to improve their English. Due to the policy adjustment, many aboriginals have shifted to the dominant language, i.e., English, and consequently this shift has caused the death of aboriginal languages at a more rapid rate. Despite many differences, there are similarities between Australia and China in terms of language issues in a multiethnic and multilingual country. Both of these two countries have one dominate common language-English in Australia and Putonghua in China; both of them have many dialects and minority languages. The challenges that Australia faces in terms of aboriginal language protection are also problems that China and many nations in the world face.

    Abstract320)   HTML18)    PDF (1863KB)(321)
The South China Sea issue has remained one of important issues affecting Sino-US relations and China-ASEAN ties. From an interdisciplinary perspective of international politics and communication and media studies and based on Gamson's constructionist approach of "interpretive packages", this paper explores how Philippine media construct Philippines' discourse legitimacy. It finds that the Philippine media have made use of three main discourse frames:"victim", "law-abider" and "collaborator". At the same time, they have also developed five discourse strategies:the adoption of metaphors, the description of binary opposition, the application of logical data as well as the usage of visual images. Those discourses on the South China Sea issue from Philippine media have exerted great pressure on the Chinese side. This paper suggests that China should develop the legal and rational discourse in its international communication on the one hand, and enhance its ability in agenda-setting, communication skills as well as telling a good Chinese story of the South China Sea on the other.

It is necessary to initiate research on geronto-linguisitics that focuses on the language degradation of the elderly group since the aging problem around the world appears to be increasingly severe. Studies in geronto-linguistics should have more comprehensive and profound exploration on pragmatic competence. This paper provides a review of the research on pragmatic competence decline of the elderly group in terms of theoretical perspectives, research methods and current topics. It suggests that we should pay more attention to the following three aspects:the language degradation of the Chinese elderly, comparison between normal elderly and elderly with dementia or between the elderly speaking different mother tongues, and interdisciplinary study involving neurology, linguistics and psychology, etc. Additionally, multimodal studies should also be enhanced.

    Abstract233)   HTML24)    PDF (2293KB)(234)

For a long time, the "resource curse" is an important issue that plagues the economic growth of developing countries. Can financial development effectively solve China's "resource curse" problem? It is necessary to explore whether financial development is an important transmission mechanism for "resource curse" to influence economic growth. To this end, we must explore the relationship between natural resource abundance and economic growth at different levels of financial development on a theoretical level by constructing a four-sector endogenous economic growth model that includes financial and resource elements; through the use of linear models and non-dynamic panel threshold models, it is confirmed that there is a "resource curse" phenomenon and its financial development threshold effect. The conclusions of theoretical and empirical studies show that there is a significant non-linear relationship between resource abundance and economic growth in China. Only when the level of financial development tends to be reasonable, the "resource curse" can be turned into "resource gospel". In view of this, if China's resource-based regions want to promote high-quality economic growth, they must commit to the rational development of finance.

On Trade Opening and Carbon Leakage Effect in China's Industrial Sector: Empirical Comparison of High-Carbon and Low-Carbon Industries
ZHANG Yun, LIU Mei-lian, WANG Xiang-jin
Journal of East China Normal University (Philosoph    2019, 51 (6): 151-161.   DOI: 10.16382/j.cnki.1000-5579.2019.06.016
    Abstract203)   HTML15)    PDF (1855KB)(238)

Trade openness and carbon leakage have an important impact on China's emission reduction targets. By building a panel model, this paper empirically analyses the impact of trade openness on carbon emission intensity and total emissions of all industries in the industrial sector, and verifies the existence of carbon leakage. Based on the industry characteristics and structural differences, the input-output model is deduced to measure the direct carbon emission intensity and intensity of carbon emissions embodied in net export, which are used to classify the high-carbon and low-carbon industries as the standard for empirical tests and comparative analysis. The results show that there is no positive carbon leakage in industries of low net export embodied carbon emission intensity. In contrast, there is an inverted U-shaped curve between trade opening and carbon emission intensity in industries of high net export embodied carbon emission intensity and industries of low direct carbon emission, and the inflection point has appeared. The differences of empirical results confirm that there are obvious structural differences among different industries in China's industrial sector, and some industries may have negative carbon leakage effects. So China can play a beneficial role in opening up foreign trade to improve the environment, play a structural adjustment role in the direction of opening up policy, and adopt the policy of industry environmental regulation to restrain the development of high net export carbon industry.

    Abstract294)   HTML18)    PDF (1972KB)(581)

With environmental issues being increasingly serious, green development has become one of the key ideas in Chinese social development progress. Analyzing the economic and social performance of Green M&A in energy-intensive industry, this paper finds that enterprises can significantly improve their economic performance through Green M&A. State-owned enterprises may sacrifice some short-term economic benefits in order to take more environmental protection responsibilities, but this decision will not affect the long-term economic performance of enterprises. In addition, the social performance of enterprises of Green M&A is not obvious. The reason may be that there is lagging effect in the social performance of Green M&A or that some enterprises use environmental protection as a gimmick to transfer economic benefits. In a word, Green M&A is a new choice for enterprises, and the government as well as related departments should guide and standardize policies more actively and effectively to promote the process of ecological civilization construction in China.
