DAI Zhen's "Concealed Words" —A Study of the Relationship between The True Meaning of the Lord of Heaven and The Commentary on the Meanings of Terms in the Book of Mencius Xiao-lin ZHANG 2002, 34 (4):  15-22.  doi: 10.16382/j.cnki.1000-5579.2002.04.005 Abstract ( 1 )   HTML ( 0 )   PDF (1047KB) ( 0 )   Save Researchers have pointed out the influence of The True Meaning of the Lord of Heaven on The Commentary on the Meanings of Terms in the Book of Mencius (Meng Zi Ziyi Shuzheng), but they laid special stress on the basis of historiography and were short of the basis of philosophy. Philosophically, Meng Zi Ziyi Shuzheng had the trace of direct or indirect influence of The True Meaning of the Lord of Heaven from its method to its principle. But the influence is not essentially different from the theological philosophy in The True Meaning of the Lord of Heaven. This is a philosophical reason why DAI Zhen had been influenced by The True Meaning of the Lord of Heaven, yet he didn't utter a single word about it. References | Related Articles | Metrics

The Principled Tao and the Debate on Knowing and Doing—The Development of Chinese Philosophy during the Period from the Pre-Qin to Song and Ming Dynasties Yun CHEN 2002, 34 (4):  23-29.  doi: 10.16382/j.cnki.1000-5579.2002.04.006 Abstract ( 0 )   HTML ( 0 )   PDF (965KB) ( 1 )   Save A basic difference in the view of knowing and doing between the pre-Qin philosophy and Song-Ming philosophy is that the former is based on doing and the latter on knowing. Such a difference reflects a kind of ontological difference. In Song-Ming philosophy the ultimate term of ontology is 'Li' (principle), while in pre-Qin philosophy it is 'Tao' (way). Therefore, the shift of the paradigm of Chinese philosophy during the period from pre-Qin to Song and Ming dynasties finds an expression in the shift from Tao to Principle. Intuitionism highly values intuition and personal creative thinking in scientific practice. This is a positive viewpoint. Intuitionism questions the validity of law of excluded middle and the vaildity of indirect proof, and it indicates that classical logic is only a relative truth. Intuitionism stands for constructive and effective methods. These methods promote development of artificial intelligence and computer science. It always plays an important role in logical analysis and linguistical analysis. Many people think it is Frege who first provided the significance of quantifier in modern logic. However, the thorough investigation into the earlier period of modern logic suggests that Peirce even provide a clearer and more profound comprehension and representation. It was not until the late Qing Dynasty that the trade of modern telecommunication emerged. This paper first reviews the establishment of modern Chinese telecommunication, then discusses how telegram infulenced the political scene of the late Qing Dynasty, and especially indicates that it was the telegram which was used by revolutionists to oppose the Qing Dynasty. The Abolishment of the Imperical Examination System and Its Results Zhi-ming LI 2002, 34 (4):  55-61.  doi: 10.16382/j.cnki.1000-5579.2002.04.011 Abstract ( 0 )   HTML ( 0 )   PDF (1098KB) ( 0 )   Save The imperial examination system had been attacked from Ming and Qing Dynasty because of its becoming rigid, and it was abolished in late Qing Dynasty. But its abolishing worsened the rule of Qing Dynasty; many people including LIANG Qi-chao who had ever stood for abolishing the imperial examination system suggested that it should be resumed. Why did this situation emerge? This paper indicates that the imperial examination system was not only an examination system, but also a ruling social regime that was very important to ancient China's communication. It had a certain degree of rationality, so abolishing it suddenly might lead to serious consequence. SHENG was a great collector of books at the end of the Qing Dynasty. He set up Yuzhai library, editing, carving and printing books. He collected the inscriptions from ancient bronzes and stone tablest, including collection paintings and calligraphy. This paper traces the activities and achievements of SHENG by introducing the establishment of Yuzhai library, the origin and the development of its collections, its catalogue, and the scattering of its collections. In the earlier period, LIANG Ting-nan and HUANG Qi-tai were major representatives; Tao Hua Shan and Xi Xiang Ji appeared as the investigative object; the poetic imaginative ends of the tragic dramas were the focus of investigation. In the later period, ZHANG Zhi-you suggested that the tragedy should benefit and have a strong influence on society, and dramatists should create heroic tragedies as quickly as possible because of our country lacking of tragedies, while WANG Guo-wei absorbed Schopenhauer's philosophic pessimism and pursued life's value. A Defence of DU Fu's Comparing Himself to Ji and Xie, the Ancient Sages Wen-hua CHEN 2002, 34 (4):  79-82.  doi: 10.16382/j.cnki.1000-5579.2002.04.015 Abstract ( 0 )   HTML ( 0 )   PDF (760KB) ( 0 )   Save DU Fu compared himself to Ji and Xie-the ancient sages-in his poems. According to it, people of later generations looked DU Fu as a Confucian or a politician. When we read DU Fu's poems, we should also pay attention to the historical facts. But this paper argues that the importance of DU Fu comparing himself to Ji and Xie was not his attending concrete political matters, but embodying his Confucianism, for Ji and Xie were two sages who thought about people and pursued the happiness of people. Fundamentally, it will reduce foreign direct investment and trade. But its influence on local industry and foreign direct investors is the focus of argument. Based on the difference of industry structure and labor wage, this paper's major conclusion is: the local content requirement will strengthen local industry development, and reduce consumers' remainder, but its influence on local government is still unidentified.
